Classic car insurance or simply standard!?

Its been a pretty busy august so the cab has been sitting nicely in the garage but now is the time to get her insured and get out on the odd nice days we are having in Scotland!!
I have spoken to a few insurance companies and now i find myself asking if its actually worth insuring as a classic as one has told me that they would only pay out standard guide price values as would the usual insurance companies. on the other hand another classic car insurer agreed to value the car at a set price (5k) but then asked for a stupid figure to insure...
So what do you think? have you insured it as std or the classic route.
Cheers

I found classic insurance much cheaper than 'normal' for my e30

I run a classic policy as it saves me over £700 on a normal insurers policy of the same level of cover.

Depends on use. If it's a second car, it's usually better to use a specialist, 'classic', policy - otherwise you are almost certainly paying for cover that you aren't using. Including an agreed value is usually a set price on top of the standard premium, or a percentage of the premium or value agreed.

'Classic' policies are aimed at the multiple car owner, and are usually cheaper on the basis that the classic is a second or third car,one of the questions asked is,'Do you have regular use of another car?'The 'other car' could of course be provided by an employer or mum/dad....
Onother point to bear in mind is that 'classic' ploicies do not usually earn a 'no claims bonus',I got caught this way some years back when I covered an E28 on a classic policy. It was my only car,but I used a cycle to get to work and drove buses when I got there....

when I went to insure a much more valuable vehicle I discovered I had to start again earning NCD!

Go with lancaster insurance for classic insurance. You have an option for an independant valuation of your car so you get the true value if the worst happens..they are also very very cheap

Im 24 and pay £304 a year fully comp for my 87 tech1

Classic insurance is the way to go, I found Peter Best Insurance to be the best for me. I'm 25 and my 318is costs £179 with 3000 miles p/a and the 325i Touring costs £203 with 5000 miles p/a.

Classic policy for me with Lancaster - under £180 for fully comp including breakdown cover, legal expenses cover and agreed value - limited to 3k p.a but it only gets used for 6 months of the year so not really an issue.

Thanks to everyone for their input on this, im going to get onto lancaster and Peter Best ins and will let you know what they come back with... Dont be surprised if its higher as I will be insuring my big bro as he kindly lets me use his CSL mnd you i know how to drive it like it wants it.

how do classic policies compare to the likes of adrian flux regarding mods. eg; M30, coilovers, LPG etc. Will nurburgring / european cover be an issue? Primary / only car also?
I use my E30 as a daily driver, all mods declared, 29 years old, about 6 years no claims and covered on the ring too. £450ish iirc tpf&t
seems like it may be getting a little steep compared to some others on here...

hi mate...
unless youve put a lot of cash into the car id tend to go for a normal fully comp policy with perhaps an agreed value policy if youve spent a lot on it.
its not in wester hailes you stay is it? i remember speaking to you in the petrol station a couple of years ago when you had a bike.
if your in wester hailes youll be paying for the high risk.
