Is 5litres about right for a cab respray ?

If its 5 litres strait out of the tin yes that will be fine as it will be around 10 litres when thinned out... Could do 2 or 3 cabs with that amount of paint......


Dont use cheap paint mate, get it done right and it will last longer and look better..

i was told 3 liters yesterday , before thining
about 100 ish quid before vat (mind you mine had a bit or pearl to it which ads cost )

Most of the cost of a re-spray is labour,so do not be mean about the paint...spoil the ship for a half-penny of tar?

Are you spraying this yourself or just buying the paint for someone else to do it?

Glasurite clear coat and you cannot go wrong. for the colour i went to a toyota dealer - they made my diamond black up from the 181 code, then the clearcoat was Glasurite scratch resistant clear coat - car lives in dutsy environment but is still gleaming four years later.

I bought 5 litres for my cab and i have enough to do it again. 3 should see you through easy and 1 litre of clear - keep the left over for chip touch ups.

Brand is how you tell if its good or not, any well known paint company will do Glasurite, PPG, Debeers, Spys hecker are the only ones I would go near.

With paint you get what you pay for, however the paint is only as good as the numb nut applying it.

i prepped and sprayed the black E39 you see in the back ground, did all the work myself for the first time, and i borrowed the spray booth from the company that sprayed my cab, it was bloody hard work and the prep work was by far the hardest followed by the flattenting - but as these are the most time consuming jobs this is where companies charge you loads to do.

I biasically watched them prep spray and flatten my cab, then had a go on the E39.. it was not too hard just you need to really take your time first time around - if you can afford get help with flattening/polishing as this is realy the key to a good job, but the pre prep work you really cannot screw much up!!

The E39 i did looks quite good and only a few fisheyes!!!

i painted my m3 last year used 4 litres, paid £325 for paint (ICI) the finish was loverly, didnt even have to mop it and havnt yet, after painting it previously with cheap paint, it wouldnt use cheap again, its flows nicer through the gun as well when you pay more, and old friend of mine who was a good painted quoted this to me once "PREPARATION IS THE ART OF DECORATION" and he is right

while i,m away for two weeks. One of my problems is that i don,t have access to a garage.
With that in mind, would i be ok to start rubbing down the paintwork now, or would i be better off leaving it until a couple of weeks before the spray I ask because the paint, polish etc
is a protectant for the metal. Don,t mind hard work at all, but how far down do i need to rub down, not to bare metal, do i

does the price differ alot depending on the paint code .as i choose A32 which is bmw sepang bronze
is 100 ish for 3 litres without laquer sound like cheap paint ?

I'd definately recommend Glasurite.

ive been spraying for 9 years now and will only use standox i used standox standofleet paint on my e30 (2 pack) purly because its a track car and the standofleet is so so strong i mine looks nice and glossy, even using cheapo thinners and activators can make or break a finnish



a good job should still look good after a year without polishing every weekend, ive found ici paint very brittle (chips easy) lesonal make very good paint (good value for money and doesnt chip very easy)

Direct Gloss - flat colour no laqure, if you have a red car in direct gloss when you polish it the cloth will go red undernieth- easyly touched up if chipped or scratched ass it can be touched up then flatted and polished

Basecoat- colour also metalics that have laqure ontop

Solvent based- ideal for painting at home as solvents evaporate out

Waterbase- uses air blowers to dry it for spraybooth use only really



Preferred Manufacturer - standox- lesonel

if you are going a non metalic colour go for direct gloss if your doing it at home
if ur going metalic use solvent based

initial_g, thanks for that. My cab is Zinnober red, non metalic with a badly peeling
lacquer atm. Think i,ll opt for the Standox.

yeh go for direct gloss m8 as when it fades in the sun just have it machine polished and itl look like new again,

failing that i have 25 litres of orange paint sat here

Just buy a 1 litre can of Hammerite and a soft roller and do it yourself you lazy git

if you thin the hammerite down it sprays nicely

Spraying requires a lot of masking mate!
Use a roller and a small brush for 'cutting-in'
