Does anyone know why some 'plastic bumper' cars have colour coded bumpers and others just have black bumpers?

I'm looking at buying a 1990 G reg 325i SE Auto which has black bumpers but has what appears to be SE spec otherwise, albeit with the naff four spoke plastic steering wheel, not the 3 spoke leather seen on later cars. Is it an SE? Why black bumpers?!

Also, I thought all the autos had the switchable auto box, this one doesn't?

Some autos dont have the switchable gearboxes. TBH, I thought it was just 325i sports that did?

SE's should always have colour coded bumpers, a little boot spoiler/lip and the 3-spoke leather wheel. I believe most SE's are 4 door too, because I haven't seen a 2 door one before, but they may exist. They should have an OBC, almost everone I've seen is a 13 button one. They usually have floor mats, both front and back. Also, boot carpets and boot liner. Many SEs have 2 tone interiors too.

As far as I'm aware (and can remember) thats it. Some stuff is optional in other models too...

Could it be a normal 325i with SE skirts and OBC?

Thanks- I suspect this car is not an SE- although it does have the front fogs and the rear lip spoiler as well as the diagonal striped cloth, no headlamp washers though.

I have an 88 E-reg 325i se in 2 door form,bumpers were already coded when i got it

Also had an 89 F-reg 320i se in 4 door form,bumpers were not coded also had the 4 spoke bus wheel

Both have 13 button obc,front fogs,heck spoiler,elecric roof,mirrors and windows.

Whats the reg number? (should show up on DVLA site)

Yep, comes up as a 325i Auto on checking...weird spec though, electric roof, fogs and a horrible four spoke wheel...good job I've got two m-tech 1 wheels doing nothing!

it can vary a lot my SE has/did have black bumpers, no obc, wheel trims and a 4 spoke steering wheel from factory

but came with aircon, fogs and se boot spoiler

My 89 325i SE is 2 door, switchable gearbox, OBC + usual SE stuff alongside non colour coded crappy bumpers and 4 spoke plastic nasty wheel

13 button OBC is standard spec for SE's? along with shagging blind and e/w all round and 15bbs?
Front fogs was standard on all 325's along with the lip spoiler.

My 88 4dr auto one had nearly every option ontop of the basic SE spec, cruise,A/C, heated sport seats,LSD etc. But it had black bumpers and mirrors although the drivers mirror was heated!

My mate's '89 320iSE had comfort leather,full tech2 kit,15" BBS rims,door mirror speakers,OBC and lamp wipers..apparently all fitted from new(he knew the original owner).

It was a 2 door in Lachs.

It also had major rust issues so it got fragged!

Hmm, so what is the "definative" SE spec?

I think that,at the time,salesmen were probably allowed to let buyers tick whatever options boxes they wanted,as long as they paid for them!

Think thats it... quite a nice little spec tbh!
