That million mile 325...

Did anyone read the article in the Telegraph motoring section this morning ?
That Mobil million mile 325 is in there and it was saying it's spent the last few years on a dealership forecourt in Edinburgh.
The history of the car is a little blurred and was rediscovered by Mobil in Edinburgh, it has since been recommissioned and returned to active service.
Anyone seen it, the VRM is G178 SGO ?

excellent article telling the world what we have known for years... plus the MILFS on the dating page
In these days of product placement and advertorials, the journo could at least have google'd e30 and put in a link to the zone and cut a deal with the mods.

It was done on a rolling road so not many.
Nothing really to wear the tyres down.
No contact with tarmac ,no braking no cornering etc

Agree with that but surely even on a roling road it would be more than 1 set of tyres over 1 million miles , They are still in contact with a surface .

Cheers for that - an excellent read.
According to the BMW Car article it had:
400 spark plugs
Cats changed every 200K (as a precaution)
New diff at 600K and again at 800K
New driveshafts every 200K (as a precaution)
New rear wheel bearings at 650K
New fuel tank at 800K

40,000 miles a year.
800 miles a week.
Wasn't there a guy out there did 500K in a 70's Merc on original clutch?

Me to, you not find a minter crimson red leather trim!
According to the BMWCar feature, the interior is virtually unmarked as was pretty much never sat in during its million miles but has since done another 39000 miles.

E30 red interiors are seriously gross man what's all the fuss about?
It looks like Dracula's coffin lining or some shit. Or some dodgy baltic Artisto's cape.

Wonder if they repeated this with an E90 325 how it would get on...
Perhaps I'm being idealistic/nostalgic but imo 'they don't make 'em like they used to'.

Mobil 1.... in a Ford? that would have been just plain wasteful... plus if they were going to have a car on a rollers for a million miles, they needed something that at least looks good

The fecker makes it sound abit shite really to be honest with it being abit slow and autobox being arthitic (a good few modern autoboxes are worse imo!) and the pas pump and radio in trouble
He does redeem himself pretty well in the last two paragraphs though
Be very interesting to see how a modern car would fair out with the same test too... obviously should last the million miles but would be interesting comparing the engine and component wear afterwards to the E30s...

Yeh +1 but for my Tourer, even harder to fine I would guess

It's a PR thing for Mobil and not really that indicative of how good BMW engine's.
It's a rolling road, no temperature variations, no stop starting, no cold starting no lateral loads etc.
I'm sure most decent engines could do okay...

Allways some one to try and bring things down. It's a great car, and it is done a craking job and IS a good bit or PR for the E30

400 spark plugs for a 6-pot sounds a bit odd
Wonder why the fuel tank would need replacing at 800K under lab conditions, as presumably there would be no rusting?
