big dilema - of young driver interest

i have a dilema as follows........
i currently drive a 318i cab and crave 6 pot rightness. however, as im 19 the only insurance i can get on a 325 is going to cost Ԛ£1100!
the other option is to get a 320 which i can insure for Ԛ£600ish . trouble is what everyone says about 320's being shit, i don't know whether to wait until i'm 21 and then get a 325, OR get a 320 now and then do an engine swap to a 2.5 or something when I'm 21!!
DECISIONS DECISIONS!!!!!!
What would other people suggest, are 320's so shit that I'd be better off holding out for a 325, or should the six pot noise prevail!!!

my insurance on my 6 pot was more than that! i bought my sport when i was 21. Go for it don't fook about with a 320 is my opinion. Have your pie and eat it!!!
it's Ԛ£900 now.

Lads i know you think you're bein shafted but my insurance quote for my E46 318ci was Ԛ┚¬6800 (YES SIX THOUSAND AND EIGHT HUNDRED EUROS!!!)

for Third Party Fire and Theft because all because i have a Penis and live in Dublin. I'm 23 and have a full license for the past 5 years. You bouys are getting off lightly compared to us in the ROI. They wouldnt even quote me on my E30 325ise so i had to get garage insurance to solve all my problems.

But by going on the pics of your car and it's location it looks like your parents are loaded anyway.
I sat at a machine 8hrs a day scanning PIECES OF PAPER to pay Ԛ£1100 on my 318iS just over a year ago. (Changed jobs since then!!)
As with anything you get what you put in..pay less and get less power, pay more and get more power. Ԛ£1100 is nothing.

Oh yea, and count yourself lucky you don't live in Ireland, I feel sorry for those guys!

Cheers Jimbob, I'm glad you feel my pain too. Its a pisstake how much they can just rape us over here for no reason. I got third party fire and theft on a 1996 1.6 vecta two years ago and it cost me Ԛ┚¬4600. How is that possible it was more than what the car was worth!!

Simon13 wrote:Is it cos the Irish drive like looneys?
Its a distinct possibility

that could have something to do with the fact that we only got cars in Ireland in the 1980's so we're only really getting used to them now!
Nah i think it's down to the fact that our government do very little to control the insurance market over here and therefore companies do as they please.
Im not saying that there's not any knobhead drivers in Ireland but i wouldnt think there's any difference percentage wise compared to the UK.

dont they drive in reverse?
lets face it, who wants to bomb around at 150mph in a cab anyway?
do the right thing buy a 320. save a packet on insurance, stick a 325 throttle body on and a chip and youve bassicly got a slowish 325 anyway..........cabs are for cruising end of. game set and match. case closed. etc etc...

if thats referring to me dude, you're way out. it really pisses me off, people always assume that because i drive a bmw and im 19 it must mean by 'rich parents' bought it for me. i bought it with my own money, insured, taxed, services, mot'd and ran it with my own money so I know about "scanning pieces of paper" or an equivalent, don't worry!! and my parents are not rich, otherwise they'd buy me much better than a 13 year old 318 AND they'd insure it for me! Sorry if it wasn't meant as a dig but it sounded like it and its a fookin sore point!
on the topic, i'm going to uni so money is hardly floating around, so im not quite sure which way to go....so far it seems the 'fork out for insurance on the 325' is the popular option but I'll wait for a few more opinions

I,m sick of this.
320i is a bloody good car,it sounds the business and goes well.Back in 1989 i owned a new one,i lived in Germany, and found the 320 to be a perfect cruiser on the Autobahn's. And if you want a cab, then a 320 is
exactly what you want.
Remember you're 19,we all start somewhere. A 320 Cab looks and sounds
like a 325,it,ll also pull young ladies like a 325! They won't be bothered if its 500cc short.
Why kill yourself over insurance,320's are also good value as a buyer, they're a lot cheaper to buy than a 325.
Another thing that annoys me is people who think there is no difference between a 318 and 320, thats b#llocks.
I also ran a new 318 Tourer in Germany, compared to the 320,the 318 was like a bag of nails. At 120mph the 318 was flat out and noisy,at 120mph the 320 was solid and smooth.
So just imagine yourself cruising in your 320 cab with the sun out the hood down, and few more pennies in your pocket.
And you can always upgrade the TB.

William, if your going to uni your going to need money for far more important things than BMers (booze, going out, food, strob lights, lava lamps, .

, megaphones, water guns, dingy boats, rando trips to dublin/amsterdam, did i mention boooze?)
Stick with a 318i and you'll have a whole lot more fun!
a least you have a car and a e30 at that!
Don't lin those insurance feckers pockets any more!

Oh and if you have a car you'll end up driving people around and people (who don't drive especially girls) seam to think that petol cost 1p a litre....

i passed my test when i was 19
first car was a rover 218sld turbo
second car was a 318is

(See sig

)
third and current car is 320
next car hopefully 325
insurance:
car #1 1850
car #2 1900
car #3 2200
car #4 1750 (with 1yrs no claims and 1 years exp.)
the 320 is not bad, not as quick as 318is, but sounds alot better
the 320 does less mpg than the 318is, but sounds better
the 320 isnt mint like the 318is was, but it sounds better,
moral: if you want performance and looks go for 6-pot rightness
if you want slightly less performance and less insurance go for 4-pot reviness (???)
i was thinking of doing an engine swap but thought it would be quicker cheaper and easier to buy a 325 and suffer the consequencies
as you quit rightly said, DECISIONS DECISIONS!!

evryone fights the 320 corner and seems to ignore the facts stated everytime about them. Oh my 320 was fast this and that "sound good but was well slow"
Again 318 performance with 2.5 fuel costs
they are good for shells and project cars as old people own them with 30,000 miles and full dealer history in garage etc

pah, i'm going to be paying ~1000 for a sh*tty 1L fiesta or something, next year! it's 2500 for a 325i
and a year after that i'll be shelling out 2200 - my choice for that one, though

Go for the 325 mate.I always said to myself when i turned 21 i would treat myself to a Sport and i have been loving it ever since. You could go for a 320 but if its not what you really want you will regret it.Oh and im paying Ԛ£1600 3pf&t in N.I and im 21-i would be very pleased with your quote.

Insurance quote for the sport as first car is 1700 and it's going to be worth every penny, 1100 is well worth it mate.

Cant believe the costs for insuring those things in your land. I payed the absolute minimum AU$170 CTP insurance, screw fire and theft. Anyone who can figure out my gypsie wiring, security system and how to enable the fuel pump deserves a medal to go with the stolen car. If it burns down then its an unsafe piece of crap and I will be glad to be rid of it.
In the end its a 20 year old car. Even if I owned a sport, I would do the bare minimum insurance wise. You can make a car unstealable very easily. I park every day next to VL and VK holden commodores (the most stolen cars on the planet). Car theives dont steal E30s when they can flog a nice VL fake turbo.

well spotted Lordschleife!!
I was refering to the 325 6-pot rightness
Silly post... was very tired and it was very late
having owned a 318is and a 320 i would have to say my favourites for 4 and 6-pot would have to be the 318is which has cheaper insurance and 325 which is quicker
thats all i was trying to say ..... i think

well said m8.
william get what u can afford.
if thats a 320i cab then drive it with a smile.
good car, good engine, ok not the quickest but it sounds divine (and its smoother than a 2,5) tb mod and zone chip will release a few more ponies and put it in between iS and 2,5 power.
if performance is ur thing then by all means go the 2,5, just dont let all the slaters on here make u think u have to have one.
One final thought.
Apparently the 320i was the best selling e30 there was, cant have been that bad a car then can it ppl ?
