Hey guys,
I was reading back through an old thread and there was alot of discussion about doing a 4 clutch plate conversion with machined ramp angles on the 325i sport LSD, so did anyone actually give it a go then?

Kevo is the chap to talk to about these custom diffs. He's a mine of info and was even doing some for people for a nominal charge. Dont know if he still is, but I heard good things about his stuff.

I remember that too, and if I had the cash I would get it done.
The clutch plates were from the l.s.d. of a Capri 2.8i, with a little machined off the outside edge if I remenber correctly.

Hoshy on here has done this to the diff on his iS, I'm sure you could ask him for more info.

I presume this means you get the same ramp angles on the throttle and coast? You don't really want an aggressive ramp on the coast side of a RWD LSD imo.

Wouldn't want to back off mid corner in the wet...

No, not really!

This is a good read:

But I am pretty sure you can't have different ramp rates for accel/coast on a BMW diff. I did ask the question about 3 months ago, but no one responded

People do seem to get carried away and think they need massive lock up all the time, when it will actually hinder you when trying to turn into a corner. Massive lock up required for some strange reason? get a welder

An aggressive coast ramp, can apparently make the car more stable as you are less likely to lock one wheel, but it will make the car understeer. I am far from an expert with the RWD stuff, but read the article, its a good read if nothing else.

I'm definitley going to give this a go, I've priced up the plates that I think are required, from
www.fostek.co.uk, but does anyone know if it's the thick (2mm) or thin (1.5mm) washers are required, I also read somewhere about leaving one of the washers out as well as the machining to allow for the extra clutches. Think i'm going to try 30°/30° ramp angles, i've driven plenty of crazy lsds and even welded diffs before so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Ahaaaa...!!!
This is what I've been looking for.
Recently I've fitted a Kazz 1.5 way unit to my 318is. What I was not ready for was the way it'd handle with it installed. When going around a corner (long sweeping ones especially) when I accelerate the car tends to go on a wider arch, but when I release the accelerator the car suddenly turns in a lot more.
If not ready for it and pushing through a corner it could get you in a lot of trouble.
I take it this is all down to ramp angles...!!??

Stan, you're saying that your car understeers with the power on and tightens up the line when you back off?

Pretty much.
I don't lose traction on the front or anything (far from it).
It feels like the rear wheels are locked so much (when accelerating) that it is pushing the car straight on. It even causes the inside wheel to skip when doing low speed (first gear) tight corners (t-junctions etc).
The lock is less then when I ease off the accelerator, so it turns in as normal.
I took this to be the characteristics of a 1.5 way lsd... Is this strange?

Sounds like to much accel lock, or not enough accel slip, depending which way you look at it. I am not up together on Kazz diffs, have they got interchangable ramp angles like a Tran X diff? I would assume they have.
I was going to paste a setup manual I had with my Tran X diff, but I can't seem to copy the link from another forum.(his scan of the manual).
It basically depends on how you arrange the plates to what angle and what preload you can acheive. I would presume on a £700+? bmw diff you'd be able to do similar.

I don't have a clue if they have interchangeable ramp locks.
But yes, It pretty much is loads of lock with very little slip on acceleration.
(Was great craic in the snow this morning though...
