what does it mean no oil change

exactly what it says on the tin, whatever oil it is with, dosen't need changing.

would like to know what that oil is though..

for an auto, sealed for life transmission
never change the fluids in a bmw auto
not like the mercs where a good flush out sorts em out
screws them

For gearboxes that supposedly have lifetime oil in them...

dont some auto transmissions come as sealed units?

all the new stuff from like e39 onwards i think, any problems you cant sort out by reprogramming you just chuck it and stick a new one in..

you can do it but its 100 per cent unadvisable.

General Warning about Automatic Transmissions: Many BMWs have "sealed for life" automatic transmissions. Regardless of whether you have a full BMW service history, the dealer will never change the auto fluid. Many of these boxes are failing around the 120-150k mark - often well outside of warranty and to a cost of £3.5k plus VAT. A good independent or automatic transmission specialist can and will change the fluid for you (and any good BMW independents will recommend this anyway). This is commonplace in the US and means the 'box should last the life of the car rather than being the cause of it being written off. General advice is ensure the fluid is flushed out every 60k or more preferably at each Inspection II. However, one specialist says autoboxes do not take well to being drained and having their ATF replaced.

Life time oil it says, and life time oil it means!
What it doesn't say is that the life in question will be extremely short by BMW standards, if the oil isn't changed.

I had the sealed for life oil changed in my E39,the specialist recommended it,and he worked for BMW 10 years or more!

Well worth doing in my opinion,and others too,oil cannot last forever.

But why dont bmw ever change it even on a car with full bmw service history and 180k on the clock
Because they honestly believe the box will take better to being left alone than to having nice new oil

I cant see why either but they must know something and have their reasons i thought mercedes boxes were made by zf too and they need fluid changes

Ive had two boxes 'opened' and fluid renewed with same and the filters done, like a new car is what i say, sealed for life, i dont think so.

my mates e39's autobox has just papped it.
£750 later and 1001 comments of, the oil should be changed around 100k or at inspection 2's even BMW quoting it.
They won't last for life or rather that life is about 150k without an oil change.. and they are a pita to do
