Wrong Engine,Maybe!!

Hello,
It appears my 320i cab has had a new engine sometime in its life and is not the same as the number on the log book.
I would like to know whether it is the correct size engine and not perhaps a 325i with the 320i parts strapped to it(as the car does not run very well).
I have spoke to BMW and they do not have a system that will identify engines by their code
Is there a register of engine No/codes that give production dates and engine sizes,
here's hoping!!
