welcome to the zone, as magpie says rust is the main killer, jacking points, floor pan, sills, scuttle, sunroof, arches, inner arches. head gaskets and cracked heads. rear springs prone to snapping.

dont let this put you off though
the problem with sports is the tech-2 kit is a great hiding place for rot,

Hello mark, good to see another, from the land of sheep joining up
As already mentioned rust is the killer, the mechanicals are usualy quite reliable.

If its a Tech 2 your getting ask the buyer if you can look under the kit....(take it off), manly the skirts as they could be hiding a hole the size of your head.... or just rotten patches. Basically check as much as you can for rust, dont worry as much about condition of the engine etc. As stated, make a point of checking under the arches, under the kit, the floor panels (if possible), open the sunroof and check down inside that etc.
Genuine sport converted to manual? Have a look into that as the prizes that come with a genuine sport are the sport's gearboxes. If its been converted to manual theres a chance its a bog standard 325i box, which would need replacing if your after a real sport.
See if you can get some pics and some more info on the car. You never know, someone on here may know about it and give more advice and/or clarification on its condition. Maybe someone who lives close as well may help look over it for you.
Welcome.
