Your username (but not the number of doors in your avatar!) would suggest that you need an m42 318is engine rather than an m40 318i engine?
Either way, if the engine is brand new, then yes it's a good price. Otherwise, the value depends on condition / miles / history / warranty...

It certainly isn't gonna be NEW and doubtful if its reconditioned but
if its half decent, snatch his hand off and if it's fitted give him your eldest child too.

What engines are available? I'm quite curious now. Didn't think that was possible.

Have to look into that. Could do with a nice 325i engine.... that'll be a nice spare for when it goes pop. If you could still buy an S14 engine you could make some sleeper..... Last s14 engine i saw for sale was a 320iS engine on the fleabay goin for something near 4K (euros) and had done 160 (KM)

i could be wrong but my etk disks said a new s14 engine is 2-3k i could be wrong tho as it was a while back when i had them installed with the 2003 price lists
i will reinstall it and see what prices i can get and see if i can get uptodate prices

Go for it. Theres lots of people on here who spend sh*t loads on their cars and some would probably like a new lump for that added reliability.

mine is a 318i not is i made mistake when registering lol, as for this engine i dunno mileage yet, i have been offered a engine from a 320i how much work would be involved in dropping this in place of my 1.8i?

a 320i has pretty much the same preformance as a 318i but with a drink problem, so it would be wasted effort in my opinion
a 2.5 would be better

i`m not thinkin in terms of performance just getting it moving again, and surely a 2.5 is an even thirstier beast.

if you have been offered a 1.8 m40 engine for £190 i would ask for the rest of the car with that.that's silly money they cant give them away on eBay

No, it isn't the same or even similar. It is significantly faster than the 318i and if I can get well over 30mpg on a long run and 25mpg booting it around town (with a slush box), then a manual version in good nick shouldn't break the bank petrol-wise.
... a 2.5 would be better

Ah well, can't disagree there. If an engine swap is on the cards, it would be just as easy to slot in a 325 as it would a 320 and the 325's much greater low-down torque is a huge benefit.

a 320i is not as good on fuel consumption or peformance as the 318i

Not really, the 320i is considered just as thirsty as its bigger brother. Still neither of them are that bad, just worse than the 4 pots. Its all about 6 cylinders and if you have to fork out a few extra pennys for the petrol its worth it!

325i can be good on fuel just depends how you drive it. got the pm's if not mate i can remove the engine and running gear and stuff and can load in a van.
