Your dashboard carpet will likely be made of the same stuff, and have a label on it.

Dashboard carpet
After market cover up job that has now been ditched for new dash.
I would take a guess at 75% of E30s in Australia have this lovely styling feature

C'mon guys, bid bid bid, you know you want to. If sun isn't a problem in your neck of the woods it will also keep the dash warm in winter.
Some clown is going to pay for my new dashboard for me

Like I said, a must have extra for the sunny climes and here is why:

But seriously, can anyone answer my original question???

BMW build quality.
If cracks in the dashboard are your biggest problem, you're doing better than 90% of the Zone.

Where is this all going?? I just want to know if standard cut pile circa 83 carpet is suitable for dyeing (ie. nylon not acrylic)

Try a burn test. As I remember it, nylon melts whereas acrylic burns straight away.

Here you go. I was wrong about the results you'd be looking for though:

I know a few people on here have dyed their carpets. Not sure who though. Get a tiny cut out of carpet from another E30 (breakers, someone off the zone) and test it on a little square. See if it will be ok.

Thanks for the offer Matt but I will send a small sample cut from above pedals to the dye suppliers and they will confirm for me.

I wish we had cracked dashboards instead of rust.

Saying that is quite funny... One of mine has minor rust issues growing around the scuttle panel.... the other has a cracked dash.
