My New Plates

Just got these 'vintage' style German number plates but I'm not sure about them. Will people think that Herman Goerring is at the wheel?

I'm really not sure about the German Crest?

On the IOM, cars built before 1/2/90 can have black non-reflective number plates.

I doubt they're UK legal (on the mainland you'd be pulled, I'm sure), but I wouldn't worry about the ethics of it; the eagle's not clutching a swastika.

What do we think, should I trim them? I wanted to get short plates originally but they only did the standard size in black.

Comments would be appreciated to help me decide:

I would trim them, mate. It looks nicer.

Just as a side-note, the eagle has nothing to do with the Nazi party, although some who don't know their history may get this confused with this political party. The eagle symbol actually goes back centuries in German history. I may be wrong, but I think that symbol is still used today on certain German flags; no doubt if will always have an ominous stigma attached to it because of past history.

Trim them. Unless you enjoy looking like Goebbels.

Ah yes, but the swastika was originally an Indian symbol pinched by the Nazis, where as the eagle crest is a traditional German symbol.

I've trimmed them using some real life hacksaw 'photoshopping' - here they are.

(Available: 2 x bits of metal with the German crest)

It's registered on the IOM and was manufactured before 1/2/90, so the only requirements are height / spacing / width of letters, with no italics. I could have just tip-exed the number plate on if I wanted! The only thing that may not be legal is the 'zero' instead of 'O', but seeing as they don't distinguish between O and 0 on UK or IOM number plates this may be fine.

As long as they are legal in place of registration I can use them in UK fine (not saying that I wouldn't get pulled though). I used the golf in the UK when at Uni and never got pulled. The golf was just a GL, but I did steal the hub caps from a different car.

i had something very similar and they lasted about a hour and half before i got pulled over and was told to change them or receive a big fine and they were on about that they could get in contact with the dvla and get my car registered as a Q plate!! i swiftly changed them the next mornin, they are currently hanging on my wall in my garage!! coppers, W***ers!!

Surely even the dumbest plod would know from the reg that it wasn't a UK car?

Not my bag, sorry. Is it really worth all the aggro being pull over all the time and failing MOT's for persuing a borderline barryboy modification? Blank standard plates with standard font actually look ok when missing the silly icons in the left corner and the dial a turd car dealership imprints

Also no MOT on IOM!

The crest may have been a wrong, but trimmed I dont think they are barryboy :( , I've got the opportunity to make a small distinction to the look of my car, its not exactly a body-kit or neon lights is it..

I think in the UK you can put black and white plates on cars built before something like 1972, that sort of era.

This basically confirms the fact that the IOM is 20 years behing the UK 8O

No MOT!? Does that mean you could actually drive the car until it falls to bit or is there some kind of control over the condition of ones vehicle?

Give them a trim tomorrow, take some pics and post them up. Maybe if done properly they might look ok.

I think you can drive a car until it falls to bits. There is a Manx Road Test, if a car is imported and is over 3 years old (IIRC), or if it has been untaxed for more than 2 years then it has to go through the test.

I have been told the test is stricter than an MOT but I cant confirm that, when I was looking for an e30 I wasn't prepared to get one from UK and bring it back, just in case I couldn't get it through the test. I think there is a yearly test for taxis, minibuses and HGVs and the like.

The police do do random checks at the road side when they feel like it, but this is mostly in the winter and concentrates on lights.

I've already trimmed them, the pics are half way down page 1, I'm happy with them, I dont know why I thought the crest would look ok :)
