Defo 1.9 z3 shifter mate, I've got one fitted to mine and it makes 100% better for changing.

Not sure that it's a straightforwad swap on an old 316 carb because the early cars used a different shift mechanism. What year is your car?

Check ETK to see if the standard shifter part for your car has the same part number as for, say, a 1990 build 325i. If it is then you know the z3 shifter should fit.

I've been meaning to fit one to one of mine to see if I like it - what is the best method to avoid fouling the vibration damper, remove it or bend the selector shaftas it says on the wiki (see below)?

I bent the selector rod for mine, its not too bad. Just gave it a smack with the hammer, see if it will fit, if not - another smack and so on. Quite fun, as it happens.

Part numbers you need from memory

25117527252 x1 (z3 1.9 )
25111220600 x1
25111220379 x2
25111220439 x2

sorry to butt in but also mayb of some use if you do get one.

Was fitting mine and couldn't fit the circlip onto the rod with the yellow washers either side!? just doesn't seem to poke through enough for the recess in the end of the rod to show? the z3 shifter looks like it has more nylon protruding at the bottom of the shifter making it wider or am i going mad?? does it need the yellow washers either side or can i miss these off?

I know you have to bend a certain rod to get these to work but thats all i know. GL mate.

mccarthy the level was modified in later years so that you dont need the washers at the side anymore.
Remove all the washers off the connecting rod and connect on your lever and pop the circlip on, job done.
Not all cars require you to bend the rod either

thought so, luckily this is what i did! so the fact you only get 2 yellow washers in the kit now is for the other end of the rod when you connect it to bend it?

Is this easier to do with the box out, might fit one before my m42 goes in, or is there only any benefit if you are going to track it/bothered about you 1/4mile or 0-60 times

Just helps when you want to play with your gears a bit more. And a bit more of a solid feeling gear change, and can change gear quicker. Good little upgrade.

X3/X5 lever? Does this stick up higher than the standard lever but also give a shorter throw then? Sounds like just the job providing it's not so tall that it looks wrong - has anyone tried this?

They look on etk like they have too much of a bend in them to fit without modification so would presumably sit strangely in the car - as above, has anyone tried it?
