I there all, my name is Garry and I am totally new to this forum. I love E30’s and I am so glad I have come across this site. It is very informative and helpful to all those who have a large interest in these cars.
I just turned 21 and I have just bought my E30 it is a 1.8IS m42 totally standard. Its probably one of the best investments I have made so far lol. Apologies to the fact that I have no images to show you guys as yet but ill make sure ill snap some up and upload them as soon as I can.
I am a student studying in university and this is my sideline hobby. Guys this is where I ask for help”¦.
I have had my license 5-2-07. It is totally clean I have no points no bands no nothing. I have never been insured on a car before and this is going to be my first. Applogies again if this has been posted once before but I am finding it hard to get good insurance quotes.
Quotes for Fully Comp + legal cover and all that”¦..
1. 1900ish
2. 2200
3. 1600
These are the three quotes I have had so far from different insurance companies I do apologies I do not know the companies names that have offered these quotes to me as I have lost the piece of paper I was writing on.
A lot tell me to put my mum or my dad on the insurance and me as the named driver. I have yet not tried this as the figures above have put me of all this.
Dose anyone here know of any good insurance companies for people my age.
Appreciate all the Advice Guys.
Regards
Garry.

Welcome to the zone fella! i insured my iS a couple of months ago when i was 19 with direct line for about 900 quid fully comp with 2 years ncb iirc. If you can, try to get in in your own name to start builing your ncb up! Looking forward to the pictures!

Hi there cook 900pounds sounds good but I have any no claims at all apparently you can be a second driver and still build up your no claims if you are with direct line.
I don’t mind putting my father on the policy if anything that would help I guess as he has about 7 or 8 no claims bonus. If I did for instance put my father on the policy would this effect his no claims as he has already said if I am going to use him for my benefit lol he wants all his stuff protected.
He has his protected on another policy which he has with his own car but would this effect me and him on my car ?

You cannot use a NCB on two separate policies (at least you're not supposed to!).
I also wouldn't bother with Fully comp.
Good Luck

£1400 ish for my iS touring, engine swap declared, no NCB, pass +, not quite been driving a year. I'm 20 and on my own policy TPFT with eCar. Still steep to be honest, but doable.

Just above your thread there is a link to a number of companies who do classic car insurance. They may be worth looking through for information / quotes.
I think there are quite a few young lads on this site, so just sit tight and the good information will come to you.
And welcome to the zone
P.S I'd second trying Footman James. Passed my test yesterday and their quote was around half of ANYONE elses. Not for my E30, though, so can't help you with figures (and I'm slightly older, erm, and a bird

)

Because an insurer will only pay out about £600 on a 318is, after your excess of £300, thats £300! For a policy which might have cost £300 more than a TPF&T.
I am still adament that I won't take out a Fully comp policy until the value of the car in my eyes is over £2500.
22 TPF&T, 4 yrs no claims, 318is, Lpg conversion £300.

The best advice I can suggest is to have insurance in your own name otherwise you will never earn any no-claims discount. There are a few insurers now who advertise saying named drivers earn their own NCD but this is rubbish as it only applies if the named driver takes out a policy with that insurer, for example your old man insures the car in his name with Direct Line with you as a named driver, a year later you decide to forge out on your own. The only insurer who would give you the NCD would be Direct Line.
Also, if you are a student and if you are living away from home then it will all end in tears if the car is in the old man's name with you as the "occasional named driver" yet you have an accident 100 miles from home and the insurers find out you are a uni student, they will quickly rumble you and void the policy when you need it most (claim time), false economy.
So, get the quotes for you as the owner/registered keeper and the main driver. It DOES bring your premiums down if you add a mature relative (parent/grandparent) as a named driver. Don't tell any porkies when getting quotes, student is a high risk occupation (yeah right), but probably not worth lying and saying you are something else as it will again bite you if you have a claim and the insurers do any sniffing.
Limit the mileage, but be sensible as if you go over the mileage they will charge you a set rate per mile for any exces mileage.
Best bet to search is the back of car mags for insurers, a lot of the direct insurers may not be too good on quotes, try your local friendly broker who may be able to assist. Are there any insurance schemes/ deals available through NUS?
Fully comp may not be worth while as the extra you will pay over TPFT would probably pay for another E30, plus you'll get shagged with a big excess of about £500+, so odds are, if you ever claimed for the car under a fully comp claim you probably would end up with some lose change in your pocket after excess deducted and if you still owe them instalments they make sure they get that clawed in/ offset against the claim - result = no payout.
Quinn Direct are often a competitively priced insurer.
I highly recommend Herts Insurance Consultants HIC
www.hertsinsurance.co.uk
You are much better speaking to them rather than website quotes as too many assumptions get used for web based quotes and there is no discretion, whereas speaking to a broker like HIC, they will ask you more about your circumstances and if you sound like a sensible chap and a decent risk they can ring the underwriters and get further reductions.

Every 1 I appreciate all the help....
oh..... I don’t know what to do now you guys have got me in 2 minds of getting 3rd party or fully comp.
to be honest I always thought no matter what fully comp will always be better of because say for instance you bump into some1 and of course you know its your fault....you are still covered”¦”¦where as if you bump into some1 and you are only covered for 3rd party you are not covered and whatever damage done to the some1’s car you will have to pay out your own pocket.
Hmmm all this has helped yet got ime in a stuck position.
E30beemerlad you’re a start my friend thanks allot for the in-depth info there

Until you are older, have some NCD and a more expensive car, forget fully comp as you're just putting money in your insurer's pocket you won't get back.
Fully comp would pay your own damage/write off value if you stuffed someone plus the other person's damage.
Third Pary Fire & Theft would only pay for the claim of the other party.
But fully comp, unless the difference in premium between FC & TPFT is only about £50-£100 then forget it.
Let me illustrate the example.
You own a 318is, it's worth £1000 (be realistic) it's probably worth £600 in the eyes of your insurer. You could have insured it for a premium of £1500 third party fire & theft, but you push the boat out and go fully comp which costs you £2200. So an extra £700 over TPFT.
You hit poor Mrs Miggins in the rear at the traffic lights on the way home one night, her car is a bit of a mess and your E30 is looking rather sorry for itself. You've only had the insurance for 2 months and are paying by instalments at an eye watering £250 per month., you still owe them 9 instalments. so 9x £250 = 2250.00 still owed.
You ask your fully comp insurers for a payout for your written off car, they say yeah no probs, we value that at £900 (very generous of them) but you have a £500 excess sir, so that'll be £400 after we have offset the excess. Oh you still owe 9 instalments, feck orf and thanks for calling ********** Insurance Services.
If you had third party fire & theft, you'd have to either repair your car or buy another, but you won't have spent £2200 on insurance in the first place.
Oh and last tip, don't bother with legal cover, rip off. If you've had a smash and it isn't your fault any solicitor will take you case on without charging you.

even at 28, with several years noclaims, putting my mum on the insurance still knocks a fair chunk off. think it was £200 less on the m3 the first year i had it
tbh your quotes aren't all that bad. ive seen young drivers paying more for crappy 1.0 superminis

its true, my iS was about £100-£200 cheaper to insure than my insurance group "3" standard peugeot 106! And that was in the same year with the same NCB!

Also you have to have had a licence for 2 years (or be over 21) i cant remember exactly which but its one of those anyway
Quinn direct as someone mentioned is good. Had 2 policies with them, but, also try (and phone them) Adrian Flux and Highways. Someone told me they are owned by the same person/company, but they still fought each other for my buisiness bringing my quote down by 60% on the previous year, so all told not bad.

I'd be seriously considering a chat with adrian flux..
I insured a 320 with an m50 conversion, shocks, springs, arb's, slip diff and few other mods for £700 thats 20 yr old with 3 yrs exp and no no claims, no points, no claims
I put my mum as a named driver on all my policies she has only driven my m3 for about 4 miles but still reduced my policy by 900 quid in first year (19)

The first point to remember is that there is no logic to insurance quotes whatsoever!
For example, I have a 318i insured with a certain company, and when that policy expires at the end of the month, I want to change it to a 525i. The company insuring the 318 have quoted me nearly four times the amount for the 525i, although there are several other companies who will insure it for just a few pounds more than I'm paying now! I also have quotes from other companies for TEN times what I'm paying for the 318.
You need to get on the phone for a day and ring companies direct, or find a good broker to do the work for you.

Absolutely correct. Recently had a quote for me to insure an old Vauxhall (which I decided not to get - had to get that one in).
It was cheaper for me to insure just myself (having passed my test two hours previously) than to put my partner (15+ years with a licence, albeit with a couple of SP30s) on the insurance as well.

Have you been insured in a car under your own name before? If so thats where any no claims/discounts would have built up. If so make sure u SWAP your insurance from that car to your iS.
For me, it was £560 for me to set up a new policy on a 320i, but i swapped it for my fiestas insurance and that made it £385 (only 15 quid more than my fiesta yearly!!)
Then i asked for a quote to see what would happen to my premium if i wanted a 318iS engine conversion (which i'm currently organising) and they accepted it, without affecting my premium

, and i'm 20 btw.
Otherwise, i would set up your own policy and fork it out. Living in england must have the advantage of being able to use go compare or other similar sites to get quotes from all companies, but other than that i cant help you.
GL mate and get us some photies!!!

Use every avenue available for quotes, use all the comparison sites, go to loads of companies direct and contact a broker or two. Someone out there wants your business specifically, it's just a case of finding them. Putting an experienced relative on as a named driver usually reduces the quote, but make sure - get quotes with and without. And don't tell any lies, no matter how 'white' they seem - if they can sell you worthless cover, they will. Remember you are buying insurance in case things go tits up, not just so you can produce documents at the cop shop.
