E30 Zone

Hi people, I have been toying with the idea of doing a Bike powered e30. Just wondering if this has been done? Can it be done? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Has been discussed on here in the past but the general consensus was even stripped out the E30 is thought to be a bit on the heavy side for this kind of transplant if my memory serves me right

The "Biggest" car i've seen with a bike engine is a Mk2 escort......And that was JUST a shell with the bar minimum running gear.....

Use the Search and you will find a nice long thread with about a dozen good reasons why its a crap idea and about a dozen engines that could be done cheaper, and easier, with vastly better results.

Anything can be done if you really want to (my brother is half way through sticking a GSXR1000 engine into a Tigra track car) but as above, unless the car is stripped out to little more than a spaceframe there's not a lot of point.

Bike engines are generally best suited to much lighter cars, space-framed classic mini's for example, ideally with fibreglass bodies, or the Locost racer style car as they weigh a similar amount i.e. circa 500kg.

As kam-325i says, the biggest thing i've seen with a bike engine, that worked properly, was the MK2 Escort that ran a 900cc fireblade turbo'd engine. The car was so stripped out there was nothing left on that wasn't required to run it!

The main problems you'd have are the severe lack of torque, and far too much weight for the clutch, they don't last too long even in the lightweight racers!

You could try sticking a couple of Hayabusa engines in it, being a 1300cc engine, they'd have more torque, but you'd still have clutch issues i'd imagine, and the cost would be rediculous.

I owned an E30 that had been given the heart of a 2litre Cosworth YB engine, running approximately 350bhp/400lb/ft torque, using M3 running gear, brakes, hubs etc, it worked very nicely! I'd definately go for something like that again, it was an absolute monster!

Forget it, it will be to much hassle to go for a try like that and if you want to use a BMW for that sort of stuff, look for an old BMW 2002 who is in so bad condition that you can do that sort of stuff to it...
Its smaller and lighter than a E30 and that is the reason why I mention it, because an E30 is just to big for a motor bike engine transplant.

Thanks for all the advice, sounds a bit like a no goer. However, I do like the idea of a cossie engine. Would it be an easy enough swap?

not overly difficult but expensive.

How expensive? Would the purchase of the donor cossie be the biggest expense? Is there anything to be mindful of?

mine has cost me around £9000 so far including the cost of the car and all the parts needed with £2600 labour charges to fit it all.

How about a quad v bike engine?

a lot more torque than a Japanese bike engine and 250 horses. Would sound fantastic as well
