I still havn't mastered this drifting lark!

Ill not go into detail, as this topic will just get deleted by the mods. But...
Do i need an LSD to drift properly?
I keep ending up backwards, and fishtailing the rest of the time.

I know what you mean smithy318i...facing backwards seees to be the general rule with me too....I havent got a lsd and find it pretty hard to drift......i have managed really small ones but nothing amazing..i think that an lsd is definitely the way forward to get drifting nailed

I've got an lsd and it is so much fun (not that i condone this sort of behavior on a public road)

it is poss to drift without lsd but is difficult so dont give up

get a touring they are better for drifting
mine comes round a treat (well did) and no lsd on that

not many places round my area to pratice drifting though because its wuite tight and a little mistake and it will be bye bye beemer so i aint too keen on going at it big style so gotta be really careful

In a 318i its a right mission to drift in the dry unless on an airfield on space the same size as, where you can have speed and room to mess up, i dont have an LSD but i can go easy twice round roundabouts(obviously on my private roundabout) sliding sideways very nicely!

Smithy. I have and a 318i, without an LSD. And i can drift it, but it depends on the condition. The 318i just dosnt have enough power/torque to be able to step out in the dry on most public roads without kaining it in first, and then you wont have the power to keep it there.
Do what i do mate, go out one night in the wet and just take some corners (make sure u can see whats comming lol) then drop it into second, turn and put your foot down. The only thing in the wet is that one time you may put your foot down and be ok, and another time it might go way to much, depends on the surface.
Also you can just try going somewhere really quite, (in the wet still preferably) and stop near a junction, spin the wheels up and dump the clutch, then turn into the junction and try to keep the car sliding.
Its a bit hit and miss without much power. But it can be done. I have never been able to propperely do it in the dry, mainly as theres not many places around here to be able to rag it so much whilst still being safe.
Also another tip which a lot of people agree on, is,if you manage to slide the arse out on a corner, you will find somtimes that you dont have to steer like a mad-man in order to get it back. A lot of the time you can literally not touch the wheel and the steering will come back.
An LSD would help mate, as ive had some nasty bitebacks when doing stuff! Although im just not sure the powers gonna be there...

I think they are mate. Its to do with being slightly longer,coupled with the weight, its spread out more evenly. Ask davetouring.....he knows about drifting tourings

but they have better balance of weight

what swirly said is your best bet, thats how i started. Went out for some midnight drift sessions round loads of roundabouts(private of course) and let rip, its s*it your pants scary to start with and you do mess up, hence why you go at midnight, but just practice and practice and it will come!
Just a bhit of a wounder that the summers coming and theres not much rain, watch out for the road surfaces though, one minute you can be sliding nicely and the next you end up spinning not so nicely, due to a change in surface!!
May have to change to a 325i to try and get some dry sideways action now the summers here!

LSD is more predictable, thus making easier to control.

to much presure on the brake then
you need just enough to stop it moving but not to much to lock the rears as well
takes time to get it right took me years

The best place to practice is on a flat piece of grass so you can do it at much lower speeds and save your tyres.
I find Cricket pitches work best.
