E30 Zone

after spending weeks on end trawling through insurance companys ive found im stuck between a bog standard 316 or 316i both costing about 2500 3rd party fire and theft and declaring mods as i go along , i truley love the e30 and for that kindov insurance money i could have a worked 106 at 130bhp but im sticking to my e30 guns so please help which is best a 316 the 1.8 litre version or 316i the 1.6 litre version both cost the same on nsurance whats the pro's and const and which would be the best fro gradual tuneability cheers guys

Awww, no one hates you. It's all hugs and kisses on the zone.

If you are absolutely determined to have an E30 (and seriously dude, as great as they are there are much more suitable and really good cars out there that are cheaper to insure/own); you're going to have to spend a few days finding the cheapest insurance and swallowing it.

In my oppinion, get a facelifted 316i, fit some really nice stuff from other models in the range such as all the gadgets, sports interior, nice BBS wheels etc etc. Forget tuning the engine and upgrade the handling, go nuts. That'll make the car both a million times more fun to drive, something to be proud of and teach you a lot about driving/driving a rwd car. A wells driven 316i with a serious chassis isn't actually going to be a slow car. So what if you're not oing to win the traffic light grand prix? Also if you still have the car when you're 19 you'll have a really nice chassis into which you can fit a more powerful engine or at least a load of parts to fit to a 318is!

Another angle of attack might be to get a few quotes for a boggo 318is. It'll have more poke than a 'tuned' M40 car will, all the good stuff and insuring a standard car is going to be easier, despite being a couple of insurance groups higher.

Get yourself a pass plus too.

That all said, a 306 D turbo is insurance group 5. With GTi running gear and a tweak of the bost and it'd sh!t all over your dream modded 316....

I have a solution because i had the same problem when i was that age!
Direct line on either of you parents name, with them you build up no-claims as a named driver and in my opinion they were cheap, i started in a 318i-£430 first year, then wham bam 2nd year 320i se-£390 and now 2 years down the line i have the old girl(320) and a z3 on a multicar policy for £670! check it out, it's defo worth a go!
Im still chuffed now, my mate pays £1300 a year on an e36 328 and it's a shed!

.... thats a lot....i'd just be patient, get something cheap and frugal for a yea or two then buy a proper E30....it'll be sooooo much more satisfying.

exactly!! there is plenty of time for e30 ownership yet... there not goin anywhere anytime soon!

try elephant car insurrance im only 17 and i gt a e30 318i and am insured for 800 poundz fully comp. all i did was put it under my dads name whose got max no claims bonus and me second driver

thats weird, im 20 on a 325i SE Touring. im under my dads policy but still only pay £286 a year. . . and thats with wheels declaired

thats what happened to me as soon as i passed my test insurance companys wanted round 2500, now im driving a 1.0 12v corsa till december then im gunna get a 318is or even a 323i if there is a clean rust free one. for some reason the 323i is the cheapest 6 pot to insure and is 2nd cheapest after 316i for sum reason.

Exactly what I was going to say. Quinn Direct are by far the cheapest for first time drivers on E30s - £800 under my mother's name on a 316i Touring and £1400 on my own policy - Considering everyone else wanted £2k+ on the same car under mummy's name, it's a bloody bargain.

And For the 50th million time, don't modify the 316i's engine - It's going to be a huge waste of time, money and insurance premiums for single digit horsepower gains. As been suggested, sort out the ground work, learn how to drive and then shoehorn in a big six when you've got some more experience.

No one dislikes you here, we just dislike the typical teenage attitude that you need horsepowaz to make a car good/fast/enjoyable.

lots of people just dont tell the insurance companys when they pass but if you dont you wont be insured if you crash, always check to see what they are going to charge you after you pass your test

Holy crap he's right! The bastards want £2600 with a full license! I've had insurance quotes on a Toyota aristos cheaper than that, and they have 3 times the power

Try a clasic car insurance company as they will do a much better price than the normal insurers

eCar here, pass plus (seriously helped), 318iS, passed my test in September so not been driving a year yet, my own policy, £1300ish (still stupid but do-able).

To the question of "tuning", M10 (316) > m40 (316i)

Have you tried adrian flux? they seem to be good for high risk groups. Also how many miles have you said you wqill be doing? Having acess to other viechals also helps get the premium down a wee bit. Worse case get one of your folks to start a policy and become a named driver and get credited with your own no cliams for being on the policay

why dont you do what alex is doing drive a corsa for one year then,buy a e30 when you have 1 years ncb,it will be much cheaper,ALEX how does it feel to be driving the corsa,and whats the price difference on insurance,i might have to get won for a year as well,but my dad said that he would drive my e30 intill i have 1 years ncb, i dont want to sell mine as put to much money in it all ready,mines a 316i with IS conversion ,so insuarance will kill me now INDY

If you're thinking about Modding your car, don't bother. I have a modded (is that a word) E30 and am only on a provisional. Adrian Flux told me they only insure drivers with a years driving experience.

driving the corsa is awfull as its sooooo slow i cannot seem to get it over 80mph and you have to thrassh the hell out of it just to get anywhere (sounds good tho as ive drilled airbox ) you can insure one for around 1400 but im paying 1800 as i had allready payed quinn direct 1.1k soo i just payed the extra 400 (it went up as i passed my test, it wqould have been 2600 or summin on my 316i) but quinn is a 10 month bouns accelerator and i took it out in feb so it runs out in december, so end of november i will be getting a new e30 woooo

£2.5k insurance? well worth it.. aslong as you Have an //M on the bootlid!

Can I just point out that insurance fronting is illegal and it's unlikely that you will be covered in th event of an accident.
It costs me £750 to insure a 320ise converted to 2.7 with bilsteins, springs, arb's strut brace, cam, exhaust, sports seats ice etc etc etc and I'm 20 with no no claims.

Classic insurance? you'd be so lucky it's more like 25!!

counting the days will be my 4th e30 not bad considering i only passed my test beginning of may

Sersiously get your dad to hold a policy on it and have yourself as a named driver. You can also work up so no claims being a named driver so over next few years and build it up.

Ironically as my old man works in the motor trade it is more expensive for him to get insurance than me !
