Thinking of fragging... oppinions please.

On my driveway is a tatty Brilliant red iS that I've upgraded and driven for four years but alas now I have to weld and MOT it.

It needs a passenger wing, big patch on passenger 'jacking point', drivers door, sill and lower rear quarter (have the panels but a pig of a job), paint on bonnet and drivers wing, backbox repair/replace (small hole).

It currently has:

A very good M20B25 that comes from a 64,000 mile Auto. Pulls like a train. I just adjusted tappets, fitted new plugs, rotor arm, oil, filter and a very swish painted rocker cover  !
Full E30 M3 running gear with: rebuilt and painted front calipers, new (ish) disks, 1/2 worn pads, Goodridge braided brake hoses, Bilstein B8 dampers (2 years old and front only - I need to keep rears), H&R iS springs, poly TCA and rear beam bushes, poly front arb bushes, newish M3 droplinks.
15" M3 BBS wheels in quite nice condition. Front tyres have loads of tread left, rears are almost worn out (though very even wear which tells you suspension is all straight). All 4 tyres are Khumo Ecsta Sport KU31's.
Quite nice iS lighter grey interior with only the vinyll on the passenger seat peeling back a bit to let it down.
Black headlining.
Slightly worn Mtech1 steering wheel.
4.1 Medium case LSD with ZM bush. Came from a low mileage American M3. I changed the oil but that was probably 20-30k miles ago.

So is it worth me fragging the car? It's not worth that much as a complete car as it's dog ugly and like food, the first bite is with the eye.

I'm considerng buying myself a runarround.. 306 Turbo diseasle or a micra 1.3 till I finish my other E30.

The above morsels are all worth quite a bit aren't they? Some (like the dif and the running gear) are quite highly sought after so I could probably have the money pretty quick.

Any opinions or suggestions gratefully recieved. Is it worth killing the poor old girl? I shan't be leaving the E30 flock. I would probably have a bit of cash over after getting a runarround to buy some bits to get the S50 powered 325i I have on the road winkeye

Jai, i suspect that you,ve already made up your mind. Shame to "kill" another potential classic, maybe someone could take it on as a project, if you decide that you can,t. Can fully understand your reasoning though.

Not 100%... I'd be bummed out to kill it (and have to drive some tin heap around till the S50 is done). There are just loads of guys on here that frag cars all the time and kinda want their opinion.

On the plus side, driving a nasty car around for a while will get me working feverishly on the S50!

I'm in the same boat with my touring.

I've had it 4 years, drives great, looks OK, loaded with tasty parts.

It was originally a 320i, so will never be worth great money, it needs some welding around the accel pedal, and ideally a full respray with the dents taken out.

It's eventual fate will be to be broken for spares, but I can't bring myself to do it!

Also, breaking the car will go a long way to funding my other project.

Breaking it sounds like the only option for you too...

Frag it. Nice as it sounds, it's a bit of a mutt.

Or sell it as is for someone else to repair - don't know about yo but breakin' is a real pain and time waster.

MMM morsels ! Jai, the answer is obvious , get the turd weighed. Just think of the extra satisfaction in knowing you have sent another IS on it's way to becoming a tesco value range toaster ! :D

Hmmmm....

Even more of a dilema then. I am partial to Tesco value toasters after all

For the people asking if I'll sell it as a whole car, I'll have to post some piccies of it as it stands (in case you're thinking it's a quick fixer-upper). Yes it has some nice parts on it but my god it's an ugly dog at present. All front end panels removed to do the work. It's all pink and dented, and when I say dented I mean some dumb bitch drove down the drivers side about 2 years ago and I didn't fix it cos I lived in Cov and the rougher your car looked, the better! lol. For those that want to frag it because of the M3 stff and the nice M20, it makes it hard for me to come up with a price. I know (well I can kinda guess) what each part is worth if I frag it myself so I'm stumped as to how much to ask. I know the trader(ish) guys will want to turn a profit out of it's bits you see.

PM me with offers if you would.. It'll actually help me decide which course of action to take. It wont take THAT much to MOT it. Just some welding, an exhaust repair and some bolt on panels. It wont be pretty but it's not like I care! It drives great. I'm just after the advice/imputus so as to make up my mind really.

I know I SHOULD frag it myself. It's worth more.

SPADGE: PM me with details mate.

Tidy it up and return to 318is spec inc engine would probably get you the best money but it's the time involved.

rubbish, time and money aint worth it, its obviously not worth more than the sum of its parts. so if you can bring yourself to do it, Frag it and sell the bits yourself and keep hold of that traders profit margin, pour the money back into the S50 and make that really really nice and you will end up with a cracking E30. and for best Effort/Money Ratio

A 318is doesn't really have any parts worth much. No mtech body kit, no lsd, light grey interior loads on ebay all the time, it's not like breaking a sport. I know about the running gear but thats a different issue along with his lsd.

But I agree it will take Jai too long to repair and he can't really be bothered and wants to spend time doing his s50 conversion.

time/hassle of breaking tho..

Its not like it needs alot and you arent fussed about it looking pretty, an afternoons welding, fuck the paint and you are mobile again, harlequin paint ftw

time n effort into the S50

if you have made up your mind to break suspension/brakes worth 7-800
diff 350
wheels 200/250

etc

tho from my personal experience, driving a daily turd doesnt encourage any e30 love.. if anything implants poss the opposite mentality!

If its too much time, hassle and money to get it back on the road then if you have the time and resources then frag it yourself.

I would frag it! How much for the engine?

wil yo not need the running gear for the s50 sled though jai ?

or have you hoarded another set of 5 stud running gear ???

Break it, or patch it up and serve it as a track tool for 2 bags..................

Yea, I've hoarded ZM rear arms and front struts with Schnitzer dampers (Bilsteins). Going to use offset topmounts, the M3/ZM longer TCA's and 325i H&R/Eibach springs. Looked at the geometry this'll provide and it's nigh on bang on E30M3 Evo spec so noworries there. Means I wont have to use spacers behind the front disks to use E36 M3 Evo brakes or E46 M3 ones. Also means my ABS sensors will be the same all round (E36).

The 4.1 diff will be of pretty much no use to me. I have a 3.15 from the ZM.

I'm now tempted to fit the 3.9 open diff that came on the 325i auto, take off the M3 running gear and brakes to sell, keep the dampers and fit them into the 325i suspension and use some MTech springs a mate is going to donate.

Still think that getting a 306 D turbo is the way forward.
