Looking at getting a touring SOON, and recently found a clean 325i with lots of services, tidy shell, OBC and the like for the right price (about a grand.)
However, today I've just seen a VERY clean 324TD round the corner from me for the same money, same trim level.

Considering Im not a drifter, and I do 2000-mile blats across Europe three times a year, is the TD the one to go for? Has anyone else had one? Will its 318i-level power output depress me around town?

Bear in mind diesel is 10% cheaper a litre than petrol over here...

you cannot buy the 324td or 324d here in the uk so you might find it hard to get peoples veiws on it, but from what ive heard they are a very strong engine, but do ya want the sound of an old diesel winkeye

i would go for the 325i. :D

or fit a huge turbo to the diesel winkeye

I think if you take an modern new BMW diesel engine and upgrade your old E30 324td you will end up with a very nice motor! :D

With the price of diesel so high, and rocket higher everyday, i don't see the point in buying a diesel unless it returns super mileage, or it is in the 330d/530d/730d mould, which are seriously quick

Ahh, now I know why I've not seen them mentioned that much on the 'zone.

As for the sound of old diesels, I used to have a 1978 Merc 200D, and before that a 1968 Peugeot 404, so Im used to that low rumble. Plus the TD does about 40mpg (6-7l/100km). Compared with a 325 doing 27mpg on a cruise, it means 150quid's worth of fuel saved on each of those long runs I make.

If they're really really dog-slow though, like a 1.6, I won't bother.

i think there about as fast as a 318i, but the non turbo versions are the slowst e30 you can buy slower than a 316 (carb) 8O

Thanks Ian, that's a nice read. Chipped and with better airflow and he thinks he's got another 25bhp out of the block (from 115 to 140). Im dubious about that, but at least when I kick the loud pedal there's something under the bonnet spooling to give me a (slightly delayed) power-burst to overtake trucks on the autobahn.

Oh, and 78dude, I will be stockholm this weekend!

Ah, decisions, decisions...

If it is a turbo then I am sure an increase from 115ps to 140ps is very do able.
I would guess that a chip only would see this increase.

My 325i sees around 24mpg on a run, a 2000 mile trip would have me filling up about 9 times.

In comparison my E91 320d will do 48mpg at 85mph and is a hell of a lot quicker at 220bhp and 500nm of torque, the E30 is more fun, but if I was using just one as an everyday car the new E91 would actually be the cheaper car overall, that includes depreciation.

24mpg makes it twice the fuel cost on those long runs then! Erk!

My mind's made up then, I'll buy the TD and some earplugs. A 324TD with the right chip would be more economical than a 316i, and more powerful than a 318i or 320. That's good enough for me.

Plus I think the one I saw had leather seats.

chipping an old diesel isn't a good idea. Hows the turbo and pray the fuel pump doesn't die big bills a 325i doesn't suffer from. You won't see over 40mpg in one either mid 30's is more like it

28 out of a good 325i on the m-way all day long, with cruise control more if you stick to 70
