No comparison can be made between these two,as completely different machines.
The Lotus Carlton/Omega (it's name in Germany) is a legend.
Agreed.
it's a vauxhall.....full stop.
Thing is,although it has a carlton bodyshell,it was still issued with a lotus chassis number (type 104).
I would have one ASAP but the running costs can be excessive!
The VXR will go the same way that the GTE did.
just like the astra vxr and the m3, they are totaly different machines, the best comparison of GM VS M3 would be the monaro vxr, same amount of doors and the drive is to the rear.

I thought the point of the thread was too discuss which is the better car of the 2 for every day use, thrashing, resale value and the pros/cons etc as the original guy was thinking of purchasing one.

so comparing the m3 to the lotus carlton or monaro is pointless.

at what point was it mentioned that its for an every day car ?

any way to answer you question, imo an e30 M3 is not an every day car any more, and if it was for an every day car i was looking for i'd take the vauxhall, its newer has all the creature comforts, warrenty better MPG and real world performance and will probably drive nicely, you dont need any more for an every day car

e30 m3 wont depreciate but it will make you smile and is acult car for reasons i dont need to go into.

but if you gave ME the money to spend on a car i'd take the e30 m3 and i had to buy one of the other, reaso is
1 it won depreciate
2 i know them and what the issues are
3 expecations etc i know what to expect

but i'd spend all but £500 quid of the money on the and use the rest on a shit box as a daily hack

any way, its non sence comparison imo.

The VXR is 250bhp (IIRC) out of the box, through a 2ltr turbo. Car has real issues with torque steer. The New Astra is an achievement for Vauxhall. I drove an sri as a company car and was quite surprised by it. I hate Pauxhall shite more than most but the Arsetra made me think twice.

The e30 m3 was built as a race car. Not a car adapted for high performance. The e30 m3 won many accolades in its day and a fair amount of honours in different disciplines. The Astra is a family car on drugs. It has all sorts of gagetry to keep it on the road and keep the meat sack driving it, alive.

Putting them both on a track in stock guise would be a very interesting spectacle. I would love to see that and wouldn't blindly put money on the m3 beating it.

As for handling better, that is subjective. If better is measured in getting around a track quickly, then the above comment is applicable. If it's day to day usability and comfort, the modern car will win hands down. We're comparing two vehicles from two completely different generations.

In a straight line, getting power down is the key, something the Vauxhall can struggle with, but with the gadgetry, the turbo and the extra horses, I'd expect it to beat the m3.

I'd still have the m3. The Astra is the champion of the Burberry clad masses. The Trevor Nelson and Tim Westwood fans ultimate wet dream.

Not sure which is the better car but personally my touring is perfect for me. I use the train to go to work so gets used evenings and weekends.

The problem is I cant find anything to replace it with. No honestly what else will pack a shed load of camping gear in it. Handles well, comfortable enough, looks good, more than enough grunt to keep up with traffic, will cruise all day at 80mph, reasonable mpg. no depreciation, cheap to buy and insure. Lots of potential.

I have to factor in the social side as well got a couple of great local meets (Lakeside Macdonalds, Ashford american diner), big shows to go to. Active forum etc etc

My point exactly. it was only any good as it had a massive input from Lotus, so much so they couldn't give it a vauxhall chassis number. BUT and its a big BUT, it still had a vauxhall bodyshell with the crap build quality and arches and chassis rails that disappeared faster than a whores pants.

LOL! :D To be fair ,alot of older cars suffer from the above and most new cars will suffer the same in time. However the LC does tend to be particulary prone in the areas you mention! :(
I'm no Vauxhall fan,but there are a few that i'd save........droop snoot,HS/HSR and of course the LC.........to me the VXR is just another freely available Astra that i see on every street corner most days.

feel im in a good position to comment on this question as i delivered an astra turbo down south at the time i had an e30 m3 and im sorry to say guys it was very good, brilliant front end grip and very fast too, even in the wet you could really throw it into corners,i was impressed, didnt have that steering feel the m3 had but would have left it for dead :( .thats 20 years development for you.but i wouldnt have swapped it at the end of the day.

I was lucky enough to drive one round Thruxton, the Astra VXR that is. It's a little uninspiring, but was very capable and great fun. I'm sure an E30 M3 would be too, if it were in good fettle.

I'd like to try on some of your blinkers guys, highly amusing.

Like the majority of you actually see any benefit from the fact that your cars are RWD.

I'm just saying, as lovely as the 318iS is, it's unlikely to be as quick as an Astra VXR, or E30 M3 if driven properly and with intent!

'Propaaaa englishhhh' as you put it is a basic, polite courtesy to extend to other forum users, in order for them to be able to read your comments. Especially when you are asking for their opinions.

YO Rosc0PColtrane FOR REAL dude u just need to relax your nerves and not let something i write get to you in any offensive way i mean we aint in no room where we sit/ stand face to face, you realy got to understand that this is the internet and we cant really see eachother in real life so dont feel that you have to teach english or spot people out when you feel u dont understand them.

quite frankly i would like to say in future if you feel you dont understand, a PM to that person wont hurt and well it is the more sensible way to go about it.

but in the mean time do take care and RELAX you'r ASs

Rosc0PColtrane,

I feel that your comments were rather pointless and you are just nit picking, this is a casual forum were members can talk to one another about any and every car related topic. Rather sad i think that we have members that have time only to criticise others...are you sure you wouldnt prefer to go to another forum, like reader digest.com

With regards to your first comment. "One thing the IS cannot do, is teach its' owners to use proper English", you are not only offending the writter but me, i'm not on this site to take part in childish and petty behaviour...grow up mate
You then went further when you said, i quote, "just makes you look like a burberry clad half wit." why be offensive? in the future a polite PM will suffice, u know casually asking not to abreviate.
i think you should jus calm down mate, coz for real yor starting to P me off

P.S calm yourself........i hear green tea helps a treat winkeye

no pm's necessary ,keep it all where everyone can see it and get the message. your right ,this isnt an english lesson but i also do get p1ssed off trying to read and understand some off the nonsense that some zoners type.
is it difficult to keep it simple and plain enough for everyone (even the older members) to understand the first time its read?
do you also talk like a gangsta rapper in everyday life when conversing with your parents or work colleagues/boss?

I would say that the chances of a stock E30 M3 keeping on the heels of a stock, new VXR from AtoB is highly unlikely.

I would also say that the chances the driver of the M3 is having more fun is IS highly likely so long as that driver appreciates the intricacies and detail of the information the car is feedback to him.

My comment is not based on experience so it is just a hunch but I have just finished reading this months EVO where they have a feature to find the best ever M car made.

Suffice to say the M3 is in this article and the write-up it gets has cemented the fact that I must own one of these little beauties before they are all stashed away by canny owners!

The VXR is an idiot proof car. The M3 is a drivers car.
