This is the point I was making generally in the E30 M3 market especially with the prices of some Sport Evolutionspacerpete wrote:Fastroad wrote:Now after having owned many M3's over the years, I just got another one with 90k on the clock, everything seemed fine till yesterday when I heard some kind of funny rattling sound. So I decided to investigate and found all the chain guides and rails are fo0ked (will post pics soon), super pi5sed.pacerpete wrote:A timing chain job done PROPERLY dr on the average M3 shed EASILY runs £1500+ in parts and then lots of labour. There is no set interval and I have seen 200000 mile untouched engines that run fine BUT when you strip them down, everything is worn out and foooked
What is on the 'clock' and what it has done are often quite different !

When I got my BMW serviced by BMW Park Lane in May .... The service advisor did say to me when I told him I have been to Munich Legends in the past to get paint depths measured that they weren't a "proper reputable outfit" I cannot remember exactly what he said. However I am sure he was pretty happy as I spent £1500 at the BMW Dealer
And aren't all these technicians and service advisors on bonuses according to how much customer spends plus ever increasing performance targets ? While the manufacturer BMW are trying to reduce servicing costs and make their products more reliable etc.

Worn out timing chains and sprockets will lead to timing scatter, so the engine won't perform at its best.
Also, there's the increased likelihood of the chain jumping or worse still, snapping, if it's badly worn, then you end up with valves hitting the pistons = expensive engine rebuild.
