Thanks very much. My world is so much clearer about the difference between TECH1 & TECH2
Now for the big question, which is the better car under these terms
1 Engine
2 Performance/Power
3 Interior
4 Looks
5 Rareity

All opinions valued
Thanks

1. Tech1's have a higher compression ratio but tech2's have a better ECU
2. People say tech1's are faster but both are 17+ years old so this is irrelivent because of condition.
3. tech 2's are generaly better spec'ed and the cloth trim was different for both.
3. Debatable, people say tech1' have a more 'old skool' raw look to them but tech2's seem to be more popular
5. tech1's because there were less made and they like a bit of rust.

Thanks again. Deadly bit of useful information.
For my 'moredoor' green bemer any ideas on what body parts of a tech1/2 would look good on mine?

As your car is a metal bumper 'pre-faclift' E30, all tech1 body parts will fit on.

Of the tech 2 body parts, the boot spoiler is a direct fit and the rest can be made to fit with slight alteration.

That red 4 door chromie is tech 1 era, but surely when you're talking about tech 1s and 2s you're talking about 325 sports?

Correct! tech1 and tech2 are shortened versions of M technic 1 and M technic 2.

88 on an 'F' registration, not sure which month. Most parts are interchangable, some with slight adjustment/mods.

As a side note early tech2 sports came with a tech1 steering wheel.

1) A)any idea why they changed the compression ratio? B) can a tech 2 ECU run a tech 1?

2) again is this because of the higher compression?

3) more popular because theres more of them?

Facelifts first were built from August 1987 onwards. My 325 was an E reg faclift, built Oct '87 and registered 1 Jan '88.

1. iirc change in compression ratio was to enable use of a cat. yes a later ecu can be used.

2. yes.

3. Once again debatable.

I originaly thought this thread was to define the difference between M technic 1 + 2 SPORTS, not to define between pre and post facelift other wise i would have posted more specific pics and info related pre and post facelift.
I guess it still helps but having a tech 1 or 2 means you have a tech 1 or 2 sport.
