As I've said before in some of my other posts, the only car I'd possible change my cab for is one of these. Yes the M3 is an option but I love the 6 pot and you don't get the s14 bills. Plus it's RHD
As for the values of these, I can be quoted that realistically I'd have to spend £6500 to get a good original one of these and knowing me, I'd probably throw another £3k at it getting it to where I would want it condition and originality wise. I gave up long ago, kidding myself that "i'll only need to spend a couple off hundred and it'll be mint!!" So I'd be up round the £10k anyway. I learnt a long time ago that "classic" cars are for enjoying. You may as well forget what they owe you, if you enjoy them the cost (to a certain extent) doesn't matter. Therefore this car COULD (at first glance), make some sense in my case.
However, it's not original (as advertised). Okay, it's a very low miles Manual and if the history checks out as correct (full BMW), thats worth a bit in itself. But for that money I'd want it on the original 2 tone BBS wheels (with excellent matching tyres) and the correct genuine BMW back box. Also I'd expect (anal as I am) the original stereo in it. The car would HAVE to be unmarked in ANY way (the bubble leather with NO wear marks with 4 headrests) and look like it's just been driven from the showroom, freshly serviced and valeted. If you look carefully at the front airdam.........looks damaged to me. He says he has the original wheels which is a plus point but what are they like? So yes, I think the guy is being optimistic to say the least.
I'm tempted (if I can find the time) to go and view it as a time wasting, tyre kicking, annoying
that we all hate, just to see what it's like. It is in Surrey after all.

Yeah, WLN set the benchmark on these but then again, go to them and you buy the best, no doubt about it. They only sell totally original cars.pnd wrote:DIDN'T WLN SELL ONE OF THESE FOR AROUND THE £10K MARK a couple of years ago? I wopuldn't buy it for anything like that money but I am aware of the dangers of talking prices down others evidently are not.
They've have sold a few recently such as:
A standard 325i cab on a J (91) with 75k up (not a motorsport car) for (in my mind) a huge(!) £6850.
http://www.wlnautomotive.co.uk/prodpage ... N=61915891
They also sold my favourite colour combination for a Motorsport recently. Again a 1991 70k car it went for £8750. This is the car that would have made the most sense for me personally.
http://www.wlnautomotive.co.uk/popup.cf ... p_i=365258
and another motorsport car (this time a 1990) idendital to the one we were originally talking about for £8950.
http://www.wlnautomotive.co.uk/popup.cf ... p_i=186727
If you look at every one of those cars, theres nothing different about them to when the first owner proudly drove it away from the dealer when new. THATS the difference.
There is no doubt that these are on the up and they do sell for good money but if I was going for one, WLN is where I'd head.

so what makes a 'motorsport' (crap name for a model derivative thats never ever had any motorsport history..) any different to a normal 325i cab?
#10k seems silly money for something rare, but not all that special.

Full exhaust catalysor
EH gearbox on Automatic box (switable auto)
Only ever available in limited colours such as Sebring Grey, Maurutious Blue, Macau Blue, Calypso red. I believe there were a few black ones as well.
Numbers were very limited and have been published as follows. 40 in 1988 250 in 1989 250 in 1990 50 in 1991. Most of these were autos so Manuals demand a premium.
Basically it is a recognised Motorsport car in BMW's eyes. It is worthy of wearing the M badge in there eyes and if you quote the chassis number you would then be allowed to order any of the genuine Motorsport parts, something that you should not be able to do with a standard car.

Very interesting, indicator for the future. He may be a year or 2 ahead of its value now, but good cabs will only be going up in value. Whilst theres still cabs at £1000 odd, buy one now and enjoy it whilst you can still afford one.
Selection of BMW hardtops available, please ask!

Spot on mate. Thats the exact reason I bought mine and I paid quite a bit for mine if the truth be known and it still needed quite a bit of work. However it was totally original which is always a good place to start.Z3I wrote:Whilst theres still cabs at £1000 odd, buy one now and enjoy it whilst you can still afford one.

Its interesting how some of us on the Zone consider the E30's as just old cars that should be getting cheaper and not dearer, and originality not an issue at all, whilst others, like me see them as superb new "classics".
Good cabs of any sort, 318iS and all the special edition cars to the M3 will all be going up over the next few years, taking them out of the reach of many. Originality will dictate how expensive the car will be, not the new extras and mods, which will decrease the price. Higher prices often means the cars are looked after better with original parts too, which is good all round.
Thankfully, due to the cars excellent original build, theres plenty of cars still around to cater for all of us, drifters upwards.

are you implying that 'drifters' are the bottom rung of the ladder?
Because we dont care (much) about originality, but prefer to modify our cars for performance and handling we are somehow lower than you resto freaks?
(sorry that sounds a bit confrontationl, its not meant to be... But I personally believe as long as its an e30, and its being kept on the road in one way or another, be it standard or modified (within reason) it has the same validity)

No, not at all, wouldn't mind another E30 as a drifter myself if I had room!
Just commenting on the way things will go on prices for mint cars. As I said, there a good supply of cars still out there for us all. Long may that continue!

Fair enough. I agree about the price thing, original cars will always sell for more.
I'd love to have an original alpina, baur, m3, etc...any of the e30's that aren't just 'normal' cars. And I would keep it as standard as possible for the reasons you mention. But with normal cars like mine I cant see the point in keeping it stock, its just a cheap, rwd bit of fun to me.
Though saying that, I still wouldnt want it to end up in the scrapyard so I'm sure at some point my method will shift from modifying to preserving... in fact i think it already has slightly.

Now theres an idea!
Though that trailer looks plenty big enough for a trackday touring weapon and a show n shine alpina..... I could tow the daily driver tech 2 tourer around on an A frame behind it too.
