Filling up with petrol

What the hell is up with E30's and filling up with petrol?

Is there a technique I'm missing? It seems the only way I can prevent the nozzle from clicking and not dispensing any fuel, is to spend about 20 mins getting the petrol into the tank!

Or I can do it quickly, and it'll shoot back out the tank and all down my fecking leg.

There must be something wrong with the breather pipe on yours as i never have a problem.
Sometimes (odly) one pump will click a lot, while another from the same station doesn't.

I know what you mean and its fecking annoying, sometimes its fine to fill up other times its a complete bitch.

No technique sussed yet though.

Isnt the nozzle side bigger so you cant do that ? Unless you are a complete gimp and force it in.

I found with mine if a pointed the nossle into the tank it seems to click off quickly but pointing it back towards the boot it doesnt seem to click off at all.

On my dads M3 the opening is bigger due to it being sold in italy i think

yup put it in at an angle towards the back of the car. Had to do that on my mazda, its the same on the e30.

Lots of cars have this problem, mk2 golfs do, most mazdas do, as do a lot of toyotas etc.

pug 205's are a swine for this!!!

not as bad as filling up a 406 diesel with vegetable oil from 3 litre bottles, with a funnel get some odd looks in tecos car park!!!

Found that tilting the gun to about 7 o'clock worked on the pug, holding it at about 10 o'clock seems to work well on the beemer.

Probably look like a moron holding the gun upside down but bollocks to it

Its all to do with the reserve tank in some cars. BMW even say in the M3 handbook to only fill when the needle is in the red. Otherwise it will take more time. The standard breather system is not up to modern station pumps that have a higher flow rate.

I only ever fill the car until it goes click twice. (7 o clock--1 o clock position works for me) For 2 reasons
1) I cant be arsed nowadays to spend 5 mins trying to squeeze a few extra litres in
and
2) If I fill the car completely its close to £70!

i filled up my car with 50+ liters....not one click, apart from the ''full' one.

i always fill right to the top but that's just to make sure i can reach the next petrol station!

There's a technique to putting the nozzle in an E30 filler to avoid triggering the pump shut off, but anyone who's filled their car half a dozen time should have mastered this. Occasionally you come across an over sensitive pump (number 4 at my local BP) which is best avoided, but normally there shouldn't be any problems.
OP complains of fuel over his leg, so there must be a problem with the tank vent system on his car.

Agree with the other guys, just fiddle about with the postion when using the pump and you'll the postion that best suits her

My old toyota corolla had this problem, but I've never experienced it with the E30s - maybe I just got used to the toyota angle.

i experience this at a certain pump at my local bp it keeps on clicking so i have to slowly put the petrol in

My E36, E30 and mum's E36 all have this problem. Try pointing the nozle towards the boot.

Filled one of my E30s fifeteen minutes ago. 46 litres straight in as fast as the pump could deliver it. No splashing, no overflowing, and the only time the pump cut off was when the tank was full!

Did pull the trigger again, but it cut out again instantly, so the fuel must have been up the pipe!
