Any spray painters in the house ?
Moderator: martauto
I want to spray my car and just looking for some hints tips and mix ratios.
Just using normal celluose paint.
I have a reasonable compressor and a few paint guns.
I painted an old tractor before and got a good finish but hope to get better on the car.
cheers

No offence mate but cellulose is such an old way of doing things would be easier to use two pack ,can u get use of an oven for a day ??? and get someone to put the paint on for you ? would not advise you to use cellulose as unless you know exactly what ur doing can encounter loads of problems .
what area you in surely someone close to you from zone will help you into 21 st century lol !!!!

as candyman say's mate lot of hard work ie flating polishing ect, also cellulose might be hard to get hold of now as paint companies are fasing this out as its bad for the enviroment, 2pac is the way to go but you don't neccesrily need an oven as from experience from working for a painter friend of mine they just used different types of hardener, ok an oven bakes it on and its quicker, but it depends on how quick you want it done.
also there is another paint coming on the market and its water based, even better for the enviroment, what i would say to you is ask around and talk to the painters and ask about all 3 ways of painting your car and ask how difficult each proccess is and this should help in your decision.
goodluck

When i was a sprayer they were thinking of banning two pac not cellulose and going onto water based, can you still get two pac then?.
If you are going to spray it the more time you spend on preperation will reflect in the end result.Buy or hire a d.a(air powered orbital sander)then sand the whole car down to smoothe the paint off.If you are using filler on it take it down to bare metal in that area never put filler on top of paint. If there are rusty areas sand it down to bare metal around that area.Any area that you sand down to bare metal should then have the paint feathered out around it to prevent a nasty lip in the paint. If this is done correctly you will see different coloured paint rings as you sand back through the top coat and primer etc. These areas should then be primed 3 times slowly overlapping the paint to blend it all in.If you are doing the door shuts its best to remove the doors and make sure the shuts are sanded down and cleaned fully with degreaser. For the best results its best to remove all windows other wise you have to try to bend the rubbers back and hold them back with tape.Once its cleaned all over its time to mask up and spray it.I would recomend you clean it all over with pre clean 1st then use a tac rag to remove and fine dust or dirt on the surface. When it comes to spraying start of by doint the whole roof then work your way round the car as quick as possible, you need to do it in one go or you will end up with overspray issues. When i worked in the garage we use to flat and polish a few paint jobs to remove imperfections so its not a big issue if you had to flat and polish it.When your spraying try to get a nice even wet finish on the car as some people tent to hold the gun to far away and the finish ends up to dry or rough. As for paint ratios etc most places will mix the paint ready for you to go home and put in the gun and spray. If you do flat and polish it try to get a decent mop and buy some g3 to polish it up then use a normal car polish on it afterwards.Hope this helps in someway.

Hi loony can still paint two pack paints without an oven and the benefit is that if you use a basecoat colour and lacquer it you wont be eternally polishing it to keep it bright and will be better against the elements ( weather etc etc ) If you want some guidance pm me with your number and il talk you through what you need to do
hope this helps

you shouldnt be able to buy two pack anymore, i heard its all got to be water based from 2007 on
Can still buy two pack but bodyshops have to be compliant by 2007 ( which of course i am , and have two pack and water based colour schemes )WillG wrote:you shouldnt be able to buy two pack anymore, i heard its all got to be water based from 2007 on
they are still selling whatever two pack stocks are left until they run out and it is only the colour tinters for basecoats and solid colours that has new legislation can still use two pack lacquers ,which is great because the paint companys have not sorted a good water based lacquer yet

These are some pics of my mates car, that I sprayed for him after watching the dvd's
,I'd never picked a spray gun up in my life, don't think I made too much of a bad job of it.Made a few mistakes but shall know for the next time.
But he was happy.

Got a back door from the breakers cos he had a nasty dent in it.

What do you think guys?

I've just had some spray work done by a guy in Essex. He's just setting up his business and seems willing to offer up good deals. I'm amazed by the quality of finish. Can't see where he sprayed in the new stuff, matches perfectly, he even sorted the odd bubble spot without any additional charge. So much better than a pro job I had done on the rear arches a couple of years back. I hope to get him to redo this work now too.
