How many E30 m3's were built?

I was reading an article about 2002's earlier tonight, especially turbos, made for good reading and started me thinking. To be honest I don't know a lot about the history of the E30 M3 and was wondering how many were made. Unbelieveably there were only ever 1600 odd 2002 turbos built, all LHD of course.

Question is, how many M3's and their variants were built? Also what variants were there, ie Ravaglias, Cecotto's, (Dare I mention) Alpinas (B6's?) etc?

Is there a book about the history of the M3? Bedtime reading
