I'm seriously considering an engine swop as my M40 318i is pushing 175k miles but I want to keep the old girl for the time being. I'm guessing the M42 engine from the 318is might have the least problems and expense??? Anyone got an idea about buying a good M42 engine and then having the work undertaken? Same clutch, loom etc?
What sort of additional expense would I be looking at to upgrade to one of the 6 cylinder variants?
Engine swap: 318 to M42/2.5/3.0/3.5???

check the enginge swap/forced induction section. I personally had a good thread looking at upgrading my 320 to M50 M52 engines. There's loads on there. Do a search on my name if you like
I paid £100 for my 2.5. Changed a few part's for new one's and came to a total of about £200-250.Gibbo wrote:What sort of additional expense would I be looking at to upgrade to one of the 6 cylinder variants?
You need to change the diff ratio aswell for a 2.5 but you can stick to an open diff which most are given away, LSD's go for about £200-250
