Anyone know if you can take the reclining mechanism out of 2 door comfort seats and put it into 4 door sport seats?

I know you can do it

2 door comfort - 4 door comfort

and

2 door sport - 4 door sport

Not sure if the parts are interchangeable between the different seats

4 door seats already have the reclining mechanism fitted as standard - it's just the operating cables and release levers that are missing. Having said that, it's not quite as simple as adding the missing bits, since there is the odd small welded on part (mounting bracket for the lever) missing from the seat back, but it can be done, especially if you have old 2 door seats to cannibalise.

Just read the question you ACTUALLY asked!
Cables and knobs, etc. are the same, but the levers emerge through the wrap around back cover on a sports seat, so there are differences here.

Consider swapping over the cushions and bolsters too, if you have a doner seat with the correct lever arrangement and back cover with the correct holes in the correct place. Swapping the cushions and bolsters is not difficult.

Note also, saloon/coupe sports seats have a slightlydifferent lever arrangement than convertibles.
Selection of BMW hardtops available, please ask!

I've done this recently, exactly the same way as you too. Unfortunately, the comfort seats do not share an identical frame to the sport seats.

The easiest way I found, as Brian said, is to cannibalise the 2-door seats by cutting out the required brackets (for the tilt levers) and transferring them to the 4-door seats. As mentioned before, the actual tilt mechanism on the hinge is there regardless of them being 4-door seats.

The only downside is that you have to cut the leather in order for the levers to poke through, measure a 100 times and cut once!

Here is a pic of mine before the cables were tightened up a tad...

Why anybody would cut the brackets from a 2 door seat and weld them onto a 4 door seat is beyond me.
By far the easiest thing to do is simply swap your covers/bolsters onto the 2 door seat frame.

If you need any seat frames PM me, I've a good stash here :D

What if the only 2 door seat frames at hand are comfort, and the recipient is 4 door sports?

I think he means he could probably sell you some 2-door sport seat frames so you can transfer your bolsters and material over.
