I'm thinking about buying an M3 as a Sunday morning blaster and for investment....
Which version should I be looking for and why?
What goes wrong?
In the real world, what should I expect to pay?
TIA...

£7k for an E30 M3?
I'll take ten of them please!
I'll take ten of them please!
My budget is about £25k(ish!).....
But there appears to be a selection box of engine sizes, various limited runs and so on.
I would hope to do spanner work myself, afterall, these are now old cars with old systems.
Body condition must be important,I note that the wiki guide mentions rust in the shell, but M3's seem to have quite a number of bodywork differences to 'ordinary' E30's?
Were there any RHD cars built?

25k will not get you the keys to any limited edition cars . The best you can hope for is a decent early car that needs some work but is basically sound. Most at this end of the market are rubbish or restoration projects with dubious MOTs . It's a minefield out there, be VERY careful.

They came with 195hp for the early cars and 215hp for the later models. Your budget won't stretch to the larger 2.5l Sport Evo.superace wrote:My budget is about £25k(ish!).....

Although they are simple enough, I wouldn't do the spannering myself if I was looking at it as an investment as you stated. A poor service history will lower the value a lot.
There were RHD models built, some by Birds, some by others with varying levels of quality. To most these are seen as less desirable though.

As for your pension fund, well it is your money and you are seeking advise
You've got mine and several others will say the same. Unless you know what too look for you'll have a tough time finding a decent one to boost your pension fund from a private seller

Z3 M Coupe (S54) may be a better bet though as you can get a really nice one for that money.
Or save a bit more and a Ferrari 456 or Aston Martin V8 Vantage, DB7, E46 M3 CSL (£30k)
Or put it in a different asset class
You need to consider how long you got to retire ?
Your risk appetite ?
Is this your whole pension find or part of it ?
Having a classic car / sought after car is defo the most appealing and interesting of all asset classes
Not sure if you went to financial advisor / expert what they would say
Otherwise put it in a property or government bonds (index linked) if you close to retirement.
Or see an financial expert

Like any investment prices can go up and come down.... The classic car market is currently enjoying a bubble, which could burst.

I suspect it will defiantly burst, just a question of time and how much further prices climb before hand. Alternative assets have been seen as a good place to put your money for the past 8 years as the stockmarket hasn't offered much in the way of returns. The stockmarket will pick up again at some point, and I suspect that is when the classic market will start to lose it momentum.Gert_8 wrote:Like any investment prices can go up and come down.... Or I could be talking utter b*******
Quantitative easing has masked the real increase in classic car prices. Other than MPs the average UK salary has decreased.Awarded wrote:I suspect it will defiantly burst, just a question of time and how much further prices climb before hand. It is therefore rather complex to invest in an old car. Look after it for 5-10 years. Not use it in the rain, replace fuel pumps etc.
Then after that you have to sell it.
Which will probably be a painful experience if a Bruv wants it (best price mate) or an Anal idiot wants it but expects you to have full annual BMW Service history.
Someone left me £250 deposit on a car and never returned.
I never heard from him again.
I suspect if he chose his wife with as much skepticism as a good classic car he would never have married.

I recall Elton John "investing" in a Jaguar XJ220 - paid something like £500k for it at the time.....

The Z3M coupe or Z4M coupe now go for similar cash, both are going to rise fantastically over the next 10 years.
Personally I would go for either of these quite epic chariots over the E30 M3.

The R8 has some way to fall IMO, but eventually it will be good.
