The part of the loom that goes to the fuel tank (sender and pump) is taped and trapped between the body and the top of the tank, so won't go through the gap unless the tank is at least dropped a little.polsta wrote:Having issues with my speedo at mo, garage fixed it yest and a cple of breaks in it, worked and then packed up again after 2 miles ,got a new loom complete with both end plugs to sender and under bench
I was hoping to keep this until rear axle refurb to save chopping it , how long laboue time wise is it to do the whole wire and go back to fuel sender properly instead of splicing ? Is it tank out job ?

Perfect thanks for the advice Brian - I'm not the best at soldering as it is and the thought of having to do it from underneath wasn't filling me with confidence. I think I will do as you say and pull the grommet out and do it that way.Brianmoooore wrote:The wire connects to the plug that should be cable tied to the steel tube on the rear seat pan that contains the fuel tank vent pipes, and there's no reason why you shouldn't replace the wire all the way back to here, if it's long enough, other than you will have to make a hole for it in the grommet that feeds the loom through the seat pan.
Alternatively, you can pull the grommet out of the seat pan, as far as it will easily come, then splice the wire to the loom on the bottom side of the grommet, but working inside the car.

e30topless said : Proper BMW's have 4 headlights, last of the run was the E30 and E34/E32 anything after that is just complete shite
Thanks Brian , is it fairly quick/easy labour wise then to drop tank enough to get it the full loom bit in properly to the sender ? As il be paying garage labour and they have ramp etc , how long would you estimate time wise ? It's very nice supple loom so don't really want to chop it
Rob it's easy to go back to and through the grommet I did that myself on one once
Also Brian is there anything cluster related that can cause/contribute to any issue ? Although I think it's def cable relaated, as last year getting under having a wiggle would solve it and last year also the cable was looked at and soldered, he said the other day he fixed 2 breaks in it also but it just looks/sounds like it's a 30 year old cable and it's had it really and the lot needs replacing

Dropping the tank enough to fit the complete loom is simple enough if the fixing bolts co-operate.
Any attempt at repairing the original cable anywhere near the diff. is doomed to failure, because the physical properties of the copper in the cables have been changed by vibration from a soft and pliable metal into a much harder and more brittle one, which can only be reversed by heating to cherry red and allowing to slowly cool.
There is a common fault in the cluster that affects the speedo., but this can usually be distinguished from the more common fault of the diff. wire by tapping hard on the top of the dash and observing whether this affects the fault. The speedo. unit is connected to the main cluster circuit board by wire pins and a socket. The problem that occurs is that the solder holding the pins to the speedo. circuit board can crack, causing the speedo. to fail.

Thanks Brian , ive often given the top of the dash a tap but it's never made a difference to the intermittent speedo, but getting under and a wiggle/move of the wire has , it would work for a bit then fail, or come/go in to to life hitting any bumps etc , he did say the wire is hard n brittle, il get them to do the whole loom

Spent a whole day in the engine bay with the soldering iron
Replaced all the dipped beam and parking light plugs, sorted out the heated washer jet loom, and installed a pair of E34 electric beam height adjusters

Moved a complete cab. (less engine, gearbox, bare shell, bonnet, boot and bare doors) from a bedroom of one house to an attic in another house. There's a lot of parts in an E30!
Yeah cotswolds.. was about 40 odd quid.. well worth doing!Cypriotgeeza wrote:Did you get this from the dealer mate?

Not just today, but over the weekend I've given it a good run, though not through choice!!!
Croydon, East Grinstead, Bognor, Chichester, few other bits around and about!!!!!!
Had to top up the oil, topped up the coolant regularly due to the ongoing leaks there (to be sorted moday!!!)
Found a new leak as well - brimmed the tank, paid for it - and came out to see it just pissing out all over the forecourt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Added to the leak list for tomorrow when it goes into the local garage
On the plus side, running sweet when it's full of fluids!!! Lots of fun in the sun!!!
Really must take off the winter tyres and get some proper ones back on there!!!
