I need a new one and there is loads on the 'bay for about £30 brand new with guarantee for unknown makes, but if you want a genuine Bosch jobbie it's £100 upwards

Has anyone used one of the ebay ones and got feedback good or bad ?

The going rate for a good used one seems about £40 but that seems false economy when there is no guarantee of how long it will last

It's worth buying a new genuine Bosch one, even when it's £100+, especially if you plan on keeping the car. You will know you won't have to worry about that for the next 10 years.

Do it once, do it right.

You may as well buy the cheap unbranded new ones instead of a secondhand one Rob, my experience of old pumps has taught me they're a waste of time as well.

Forget a second hand pump.

The cheap gear types are reliable but are A, noisy and B, too high a flow delivery so put more strain on the regulator.

As above any of the good quality aftermarket ones from Bosch, peirburg, etc should be reliable.

Its the wrong pump Rob, ive had it from GSF before, and another 3 different part numbered pumps following. They were all wrong. I even gave them the part number from the correct pump supplied by ECP and they couldnt match it

But they las 25 years? I've kept the fuel pumps off every breaker for this time. I've got about 5-6

I bet the new OE ones from BMW won't last like the originals did. But they don't sound break the bank expensive really

Try BM Mini Parts, put your last 7 digits of the VIN there, find the pump and get a quote for one.

You'll be surprised how cheap some of the genuine stuff is. Well, "cheap", relatively speaking...It won't be 50 quid, but it's worth finding out.

I thought a known good working pump would be fine sat on the self 3 or 4 years, then in the space of 11 miles I had 3 die on me. Bought a new Bosch pump after that, would never bother with a second hand pump again unless it was only recently out of a car and it was to get me out of the sh!t.

I'm convinced it's the storage conditions that are the problem. The working parts of the pump are steel, and as soon as the petrol has evaporated, surface rusting starts.
Whenever I put a pump into storage, I remove the pick up filter, and pour a few ccs of oil into the pump.

Could well be the issue, just being thrown on a garage shelf probably isn't the best of conditions. Was thinking the reason they packed up on me could be due to corrosion.

Not noisy at all, as good as original

Ive had the same with pumps stored on the shelf/floor for a few years, connecting them directly to a battery before fitting and nothing happens :(

Get a quote from Cotswolds on here for a 10% discount. Genuine parts cost the extra for a reason.. pay the 100 odd quid they charge and then have peace of mind that it's sorted and you won't need to touch it again for a long long time.

You're in dreamworld if you think a pump costs £100 odd from BMW, times that by at least 3 last time I checked. I paid over £100 with trade discount for a Bosch pump last year from ECP.

I would assume late 100's.. judging by Bosch retail prices compared to what Bosch BMW genuine parts I've bought had cost.. Never bought a fuel pump though.. but really?? £300?

BMW prices are that ridiculous now that I rarely bother checking anymore, there is usually an OEM brand available from elsewhere which I will price up first

If it is of intersest to anyone thinking of replacing there fuel pump,

I replaced the old 118 000 miles o.e. in tank fuel pump with a Meat & Doria one. The old one was buzzing like a high voltage station, the new one as an audible but very quiet humming that I probably could not hear if I was not paying attention to it. So far so good!

I never swapped a fuel pump before and found it easy... after I realized I had to remove the fuel level sensor before I could wriggle the pump housing out, lot of fuel spilled at that point.

Nitrile gloves, new hose clamps and lots of paper towels are a must and the new pump will need soldering to its power feed and ground. There was no diagram available on real oem and I think I looked at bmwfans as well, anyhow, I did not realize there was an o-ring between the tank and the housing so I had reused the old one.

Easy job well worth doing,

JF

Rubbish! What's the difference between a genuine BMW suspension arm, and a Lemforder suspension arm sourced from ECP?

Same part, made in same factory but sold for two very different prices.

The ONLY difference is that one has BMW logo on it.

Main dealer snobbery is an expensive habit!

Quite often the ECP one did have a BMW logo on it when it left the factory, which has been buffed off.
