It's for the IX (4wd) E30! Splits power between front and rear wheels... Something like that anyway. I'm sure someone will descibe it more technically soon...

Straight from the wiki:

Image

Transfer case accepts power from the back end of the gearbox, and then runs two propshafts at the same time - one to the back wheels like a normal E30, and another to the front wheels where it powers an in-sump differential.

Rare, but worthless to anyone except 325iX owners.

The front differntial is not "in sump". It is bolted to the side of the sump and the OSF drive shaft passes through a hole in it.

On my IX, although I haven't looked at it in any real detail. The sump doesn't have the add on box section a standard 325i has, the sump is shaped like the block to allow the front driveshaft to pass to the front diff.

It does have an interesting way of routing the steering rack through the front crossmember though.

I've missed your anal attention to detail Barry. You really ought to be a Wiki mod :D

It's nice to be missed. :)

My post was more related to bad memories of replacing X5 and X3 3.0d sump gaskets which have the same set up.

Thanks for this threelander I completely misunderstood what this was for and instead of listing it as being able to change 325L from 2WD into 4x4 listed it as being able to convert automatic into a manual.
Hi all It's me that is selling the transfer case. Does anyone know of anyone with a 325L who may be interested in purchasing it?

Thanks :P
