Calipers that Blew a hole in my rims!
Moderator: martauto
tell me about it... u should have heard it when it happened! sounded like my steering rack hit the ground or fell off...something nasty!
my rims are show case, one off, so i`m thinking go 5 stud, using E36 M3 gear, better brakes and wheel selection...

Like some on the other forum said, if it was me id get some photo's sent off to Willwood and see what you can get out of them before you do anything else. Its obvious the caliper wasnt up to the job.
Dont know how theyd take the fact it was on an adapter though
Bad luck mate

any aftermarket caliper unless specifically designed for the car its going onto will have to use some sort of adapter/spacer.DanThe wrote:Dont know how theyd take the fact it was on an adapter though![]()

You know how these things work, any exuse will do to pass the blame on sort of thing
to be fair id be speaking to the company that supplied/fitted them to begin with, not wilwood

there is an adaptor ...which has been engineered...so it should be fine..
just the worst time of year to have a problem like this!
i`m researching 5 stud conversion ...i think stock E36 M3 brake would be just as good if not better...

just a thought but why is the bolt holding the adapter bracket to the suspension leg hanging out,was this how you found it cause that could explain the catastrophic failure and point to who is responsible
No longer self employed but still available for welding duties.

Sorry Willwoodbeardymat wrote:just a thought but why is the bolt holding the adapter bracket to the suspension leg hanging out,was this how you found it cause that could explain the catastrophic failure and point to who is responsible
(never noticed)
But if it did drop out,the disc would have 'dragged' the caliper forward into the wheel under braking
That is the right hand side isnt it
Good point!beardymat wrote:just a thought but why is the bolt holding the adapter bracket to the suspension leg hanging out,was this how you found it cause that could explain the catastrophic failure and point to who is responsible
This has got me scared as i've got the willwood kit

we have a track TVR (old tuscan) that did the same thing at about 120mph while braking into the first bend on the Bahrain F1 circuit, i wasn't driving but the companys director was, he was a little shakey!!!

looks to me like the bottom strut to bracket bolt has worked loose / stripped and this has allowed the bracket to pull into the disk under braking. this then went on to throw the caliper and bracket out into the wheel and hence jacknife.
it also looks like th bolts are too short and don't penetrate the bracket enough for me to be happy. were these supplied with the kit?
was loctite used on the threads and were they torqued to any specific value?

the kit was supplied and fitted by a company here in sydney where i get my car serviced.....they built the kit. I dont remember the loctite at all...it would seem to have been a critical error.
i should take some better pics of the bracket on the car....
