Hi All,

My insurance company is trying to offer me £700 for my MINT iS as "that's the maximum Glass's Guide price". (Then they want to subtract an unknown amount to buy it back!)

Does anyone have access to a Glass's Guide? Are E30's still even in it? If so what's the price for a 1990 318iS with leather and 130k?

Cheers everyone

P.S. this is what they reckon was worth £700:

A picture of a 20+ year old car? Off the top of my head i would value it at £150 scrap + whatever the wheels are worth.

I used to be a Technical Editor at Glass's guide. The E30 won't be in the main car guide anymore, it only goes back to 1999 at present, the oler car guide will go back to 1992 so some E30's will still be in it, the value Glass's put on it will be based on auction prices, they don't take any notice of sites like this.

This is why you need agreed value insurance. If you don't have it on an old car like this, you're nuts. Not only is the insurance cheaper, it's fully comp and you get the agreed value back (probably £2000 in your case) in the event of a total loss.

Thtas shockingly low, but as mentioned already insurance companies don't look at sites like this.

From your previous post i take it that you have already passed on a number of adverts that illustrate what it would cost for you to replace your car with something like for like.

I would go back to them and ask them to provide you with the same, adverts for 318iS's that are of equivelant condition to yours for the £700.

Went online for an insurance quote earlier today.
The website automatically put £700 in the value box, then said that if you are overvalued they won't pay out, but you'll just pay more premium.

Won't be insuring with them

Cheers for the replies guys :) General consensus here and on PH is that Glass's only covers up to 1992. So how they got a value from Glass's for a 1990 car is anyone's guess...

As the for classic / agreed value policies: I looked originally but either I was too young or the car was (Both 21 at the time) :( And the ones that would quote me were about a grand more than my insurer. Looks like it might have been money well spent though :x

One thing a friend pointed out is that below about £1500 the insurance quote will INCREASE because you're less likely to care about the car (supposedly). I've not run my own quotes to confirm that but it makes sense :)

How about showing them a classic car magazine price guide, e.g., the latest Practical Classics values 325i (E30) at £3600 (MINT/Dealer), £3000 Condition 1, £1250 Cond. 2, £500 Cond. 3.

They don't list the 318is, however.

My copy has a 325 Sport at £6000 condition 1 :o I've sent it to them, but I think they'll claim its not reflective of 318iS values.

Does anyone know if any of the BMW mags will put a valuation on an iS?

I know BMW Car magazine did/do price guides, but whether it includes the 318is, I don't know.

this - as fully documented by all parties. If you have a fully a comprehensive policy, the words set out that define a policy declare the insurance co have to replace like for like or pay out

Potentially it's priceless. fact.
