Which belt and what E30?

I have found when replacing belts on my M40 that even though I have slacked off the alternator/power steering/ air-con pulley to its most loose position, I still can not get the belt on.

So I wedge the belt onto a pulley as far as it will go and then turn the engine over by hand in the correct direction so that the belt rides on to the pulley.

I am sure that if I do this gently I am not damaging the belt and I have never had belt failure after doing this. :?
