Your first port of call should be the connector to the speedo sensor on the rear of the differential. These often corrode and/or fall off. If the connector is ok, check the wiring to it as this also often breaks / corrodes.
If the connector / wiring is dead, replace it with about 12" of fresh wiring and a new connector but make sure you seal the joints well to stop the problem occuring again
