As someone who is lucky enough to be old enough to have been brought-up on a diet of RWD rightness, I relish the thought of getting out in the E30 in any weather. My car gets used 365 days a year (or it does when I'm not having to replace engines, get it resprayed, etc). Last winter, just as the weather got really bad, the week before Christmas, I did 2 600+ mile a day round trips within a week. The only drama I had was on one trip when I got within 30 miles of home and the A19 was shut for an hour because someone in a modern FWD pile of shite ran out of talant and stacked it.

what about all the salt on the roads? going to do a hell of alot of damage to the underside of the car. Given how much it costs to sort out rust and the time involved. the "polish" hand car wash i go they use jet washes. I tell them to do under the wheel arches and side skirts but this wont get all the salt off i do not believe.
I think the only way to get it all off is to take all the wheels off and clean by hand yourself. Hiring a ramp and just doing it yourself which takes probably half a day plus the inconveninence of hiring a ramp, getting clothes to wash, getting wet, changing clothes etc.

Not really a problem for me. Where I live in Kent juts out into the English channel/North Sea so while we have been having snow, its been real half arsed crap thats gone by 10am!

Living near a coast no matter which country is actually worse for a car structurally due to corrosion and rust. This is because of the salt content from the sea water I believe.

My E30 is a champ in the snow. Fair enough anything more than a mild incline if its covered in snow is no go, but regular roads are no problem. I also reckon RWD is good for snow, the rears seem to get more traction with a push than a pull. I saw loads of light weight FWDs struggling to get traction whereas the bimmer squats and goes. And slides are so much more fun
The RWDs you seeing flailing around and spinning up are all autos, mostly mercs.
This is on summer tyres, but I've got some chains on order from ebay hopefully will arrive this week, then she'll be unstoppable
(You only need to fit chains to the driven wheels).
Fair enough I wouldn't take a mint sport out in this weather but my touring aint a show pony, but it is the nuts

Which roads was it presumably a motorway?
I have done a GPS verfied 151mph in my old E46 323Ci Coupe though the BMW 3 series Coupe brochure quotes the top speed as 145mph.
I have done a "indicated 129mph" in my E30 325i Sport.

Lowering tyre pressures will help as increase contact patch area. Winter tyres with snow chains will help. Snow tyres will help.
I find when driving in a RWD inclines can be a problem if i have to stop especially as you lose momentum. I think if you gather some speed provided you dont need to reapply much throttle during this hill it could be possibly alright. Have not had enough experience to verify this in snow conditions.
Do you now worry applying full throttle in a straight line and the car wanting to snap sideways?

TELL YOU WHAT I HAD SO SO SO SO MUCH FUN LAST YEAR IN MY E46 323Ci IN THE SNOW WITH ASC OFF. I NEARLY CREAMED MYSELF.
Certainly interesting on the drive to work. Autobox in 3, moving on the creep, didn't have any major drama. I did notice that on snow, there wasn't a huge issue, once it had become iced slushed - that was somewhat more slippery. Second roundabout out of work today required a 'dab of oppo'.

Hardly any snow at all here ( looks like Scarface sneezed at best ) but the roads were not gritted which left them leathal. On my way home last night I lost traction a few times , which in mine at the best of times is a brown trouser moment.

well we have had another foot (non of this cm crap) on top of the 6" we had yesterday and I aint going nowhere...especially as I am at the top of a hill .
diving in snow is all about momentum and gentleness ..once you have got movement get in as high a gear as possible and do not accelerate ...just wish the car faster as any excess of right foot will just break adhesion. Try not to stop for anything especially going up a hill and try not to use the brake just use the gears to slow down and if you have to use the brakes gently and in a straight line and in an E30 have a bag of cement in the boot as well as a couple of strips of carpet to put under the wheels if you get stuck...and a spade!
its fun out there especially in the snow... been doing it for too long now and if you live in Sheffield

I had fun last night on the way home from work, I had my own playground at midnight on the estate
