if you're lucky you won't get pulled while using them but if you do go for them keep your original plates in the boot so if you do get a tug & the copper says they are illigal (sp?) then you can put the proper ones back & on & keep him/her happy.

they do do look good in a way so much so i'm thinking of going for a set my self.

illegal for use on the public highway unless you have a german car, clearly.

closest legal alternative is steel pressed plates, but they must still be reflective, in UK font, UK spacing and no D country band (GB band or no band at all is fine).

Manufacturers name and postcode must be visable and printed on the plate also.
325i Tech 1 Touring, breaking.

2.5 high comp. M20, 3.64 LSD, Fully undersealed, Spax springs & Bilstein shocks, s/s exhaust, Alpina rep wheels and more.

I've got pressed plates, with german font, regular spacing, not coloured band or anything and they're reflective, not had any troubles in a year or so.

Not saying you won't get pulled, but I've been fine so far :)

Be careful, i got stung for mine and its a £60 fine... can't complain tho as i knew i was breaking the law by using them. Needless to say its back to boring old uk plates for me! (get caught twice and you lose your reg. no. - very costly)

Having said that i still think they look sweet  strictly for photos/shows now tho!

If they have no production date on them and you display a UK symbol then they are fine.

This is taken from a 5 0 website ↓↓↓

"On a vehicle first registered prior to 1st September 2001, as long as the plate meets the requirements for a vehicle of that age, I would suggest it very unlikely that anything would happen.

The one ludicrous aspect (to my mind) of the current legislation is that it has created a situation where vehicles registered between 01/01/1973 and 31/08/2001 can legitimately display the number plates that were legal when they were first registered, but if because of damage or any other reason, those plates need replacing, since September 2001 they can only be replaced with plates displaying the new obligatory font (which is visually different from older legitimate fonts).

So , as an example, my 1973 Capri has metal plates, which were used by Ford on their own fleet cars at the time it was registered. They are still perfectly legal on that car today. If however the plates were stolen tomorrow, according to current legislation I can only replace them with plates displaying the new style obligatory font, and complying in all other respects with the 2001 regulations.

But if I did replace them with pressed metal plates identical to the ones now on the car, any prosecution would need to prove that the plates were fitted after 01/09/2001.
;-)"

Hope that help's.

Bavarian flag and everything........like the style.

I was dubious about getting them. Even though I'm the wrong side of 30, the 5-0 still seem strangely attracted to my car. They don't pull me but they always have a good look.

I got new ones for mine last week from No1 Show Plates... £17 for front and back.

What I like about them (although illegal) is they are completely plain apart from the BS mark.

No manufacturer post code or anything......

That looks  - something i considered but bottled out! Still went for the D instead of the GB though..got mine in the post today..

bit nervous about putting them on now though. Bought a private plate with my name on which i might do with the logo badges and euro spacing look...but will always hang onto my original plates!

Don't all new plates need to have the name and phone number of the place that made them up displayed?

Yes...

But sites like No1 show plates etc. state that they are show plates only...not for road use.

Yeah I know that's how they get round dodgy fonts/spacing etc.....but road plates must have the name and numbers as far as I know.

That's right. Although my plates have the correct spacing and font, because they don't have a post code or phone number on they are actually illegal.

looking good, im thinking new plates on mine would be a nice finish

is it legal to have the black/silver old style metal plates ?

what id do...is just carry a spare set of plates in the boot, and if pulled over and questioned obout them, play dumb say you only fitted them the other day, didnt realist it was wrong, and youl change them there and then if need be as you have them in your boot still, would be a bastad of a copper to dish out a fine if you said that, and most traffic cops appriciate nice cars anyway ive found

at the end of the day if they are what you want then go for it.
if you get pulled for them then just deal with it.

most of the dub/vag guy's & girls round here (mainly mk2 golf's) have them & they hardly get stopped if ever.

link to this "no1 show plates"??

such a great attitude, and you're probably one of the people who'll complain when they stop and fine you, sorry i mean when they stop and fcuk you with fine lol

run kraut plates and you run the risk of getting fined

me personally i run dealer plates most of the time these days, but i have been known to run german plates, black and silver plates, bike plates, Cypriot badged plates and even run made up plates and no plates what so ever even when i've been stopped

all i'll say to any one wanting to run these plates, is if you get stopped simply apologise and say you'll change them there and then and keep UK legal plates in the boot of the car

i've never had any bother

I think that is the best way to be able to run any plate you may h ave doubts about. Have the original real deal with you in the boot ready to bung on if the plod give you any trouble...although a police himself told me you'd have to find a bored c*nt to give you grief for something so little..but where do we draw the line??!

I think no one likes the pigs fining them - whether they are within the law or not!

They do look sweet, I ran German font and banded plates on all my VWs and never got pulled but luck of the draw I guess. I have German font, GB banded ones for the E30 but quite like the retro look of the dealer plates at the moment - personal choice but run them and run the risk of getting pulled....
