if lamin-x is ok surely the light tint spray i used is?

yeah but lamin-x state that it does not effect light performance!!

Do you cover the whole light or cut a hole where the projector is?

If you cover the whole light, then surely the light has to travel through an extra layer, which in turn will reduce the output. If you have tinted windows shine a torch through it and you'll see what i mean.

It probably won't be as bad as spraying the lenses, but i don't go along with that claim, seems like sale jargon to me.
