What do you consider high mileage
Moderator: martauto
Surley work it out on that an average milage is 10,000 miles a year. So for example my 24 year old Alpina is actually low milage with 231,000 on the clock.

I've always fixed mine in the correct manner i'll have you know, from the pair of pants that have been holding the headlight in for 5 years to the wire that holds my exhaust onSimon13 wrote:On an e30 they've all done plenty of miles now and someone WILL have been there fixing/bodging it before you owned it!
Some of us maintain our cars to the highest possible standard with no expense spared on the underwear used!

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...
I think we're all in agreement really - there are cases where 'high' mileage cars are exceptionally good, and 'low' mileage cars are exceptionally bad. Not a lot can be read into the odo reading really, but it is a very blunt instrument of perceived value in a lot of cases, rightly or wrongly.Simon13 wrote:i beg to differ with the right person maintaing the car the milege becomes a number, my pina touring has done 183k and drives as well as any 80k E30. It feels anything but a saggy high milege car

I've got a 6 pot thats done 280k and it still pulls like a train with no knocks or rattles, the only thing i'm changing is all the bushes to tighten it all up again. High mileages have never bothered me, if the car has been looked after then your on to a winner

I wouldn't be frightened of buying any BMW with up to 250-ish thou on - providing it's got a good bit of recent history with it.
When I had the original engine pulled out of my 320i touring, it had 167k on. The bores still had honing marks plainly visible and the big ends and mains looked like they still had plenty of life in them.

My 1989 318i tourer has done 111k and after reading this thread i think thats great.Smithysmith, let me know if you find any good E30 specialists near Oxford,it would be good to know, the nearest one i could find is just off the old A40 near high wycombe.I can't remember the name and i havn't been there for a while so i don't even know if it's still there.

Remember a car has had a thrashy owner who has done low mileage and another car has done high mileage with my nan, even though the odometer reads higher the engine has done more revolutions on the low mileage car, not only the engine but worn bushes ect..
Anyway if its got a leg on it, pop it round mine for a haircut and ill re stamp your book too.

my moredoor clicked onto 60k on the way back from Gayden,
it drives super smooth but is getting crusty on the edges,
mileage has never bothered me when buying an e30, it's the condition that counts,
everything but rot can be replaced easily

That engine was thrashed for the last 60k of it's life and run on LPG for the last 20k. It was regularly run to 6.5k in 1st and 2nd, and well over 5k in 3rd - but never until it was fully warm.
The oil was always changed as soon as the last green light went out and the plugs and air filter were changed every 12 months (roughly 13k miles).
