Your username (but not the number of doors in your avatar!) would suggest that you need an m42 318is engine rather than an m40 318i engine?

Either way, if the engine is brand new, then yes it's a good price. Otherwise, the value depends on condition / miles / history / warranty...

It certainly isn't gonna be NEW and doubtful if its reconditioned but
if its half decent, snatch his hand off and if it's fitted give him your eldest child too.

Have to look into that. Could do with a nice 325i engine.... that'll be a nice spare for when it goes pop. If you could still buy an S14 engine you could make some sleeper..... Last s14 engine i saw for sale was a 320iS engine on the fleabay goin for something near 4K (euros) and had done 160 (KM)

Go for it. Theres lots of people on here who spend sh*t loads on their cars and some would probably like a new lump for that added reliability.

a 320i has pretty much the same preformance as a 318i but with a drink problem, so it would be wasted effort in my opinion

a 2.5 would be better winkeye

i`m not thinkin in terms of performance just getting it moving again, and surely a 2.5 is an even thirstier beast.

No, it isn't the same or even similar. It is significantly faster than the 318i and if I can get well over 30mpg on a long run and 25mpg booting it around town (with a slush box), then a manual version in good nick shouldn't break the bank petrol-wise.
... a 2.5 would be better winkeye
Ah well, can't disagree there. If an engine swap is on the cards, it would be just as easy to slot in a 325 as it would a 320 and the 325's much greater low-down torque is a huge benefit.

Not really, the 320i is considered just as thirsty as its bigger brother. Still neither of them are that bad, just worse than the 4 pots. Its all about 6 cylinders and if you have to fork out a few extra pennys for the petrol its worth it!
