i mean what defining item makes this what it is , i mean as bmw offer lots of parts you can have what makes a sport or m . why not go int a dealers in say 1988 and say get a 320i 2 door then say have a mtec kit fitted with say sport seats and suspenction and bbs wheels is that a sport as i has all the bits . some dont even say sport on the log book . unlike most other dealers you have a option to buy a model say L GL GHIA GHIA X RS do bmw have models say l se mtec is that it i am sure some one will now pull this to bits i would just like to know is there a part not fitted to any other bmw e30 that makes a m sport unique.

'Sport' label was applied to 325i 2 door cars by BMW UK.They had most of the options built in.Thing was, back in the day, they could not shift 2 door 325's,so to make them more attractive they bunged all the options on and called the result 'sport'....these days the market has moved on and no-one wants a 4 door E30 and there seems to be a certain cache to the 'sport' label.
Youth is wasted on the young.
a friend of ours has a four door sport (yes, i know, "no such thing"
) and he wanted the genuine "m" grille badge. the dealer said no, unless he could provide proof by way of the reg doc. he later produced the v5 for checking and was told "thank you sir, that's fine. here's your badge"!
there was a thread on here earlier (i can't seem to find it atm) about a 325 with "alpina extras" which the seller said were "factory ordered", then a discussion re. authenticity, etc. barry said "money talked at bmw" so it was possible to do this, so maybe the same principle applied to "m-tech/hartge" cars (?).
If it does not say 325i sport on the log book (V5) then it is not a genuine sport. Therefore what ever you do to a 320 se or a 325 se like adding Mtec 1, 2 bodykit or LSD, etc, it will never be a sport. Genuine buyers and fans who know BMWs will not buy one or even do it up and call it a sport because they know their stuff.
Yes it was.skipunda wrote:Nor was the closer ratio gear box afaik

but hasnt it been shown that you can have sport added to a v5 just by changing the details?andy1200 wrote:If it does not say 325i sport on the log book (V5) then it is not a genuine sport. Sport box, Black headlineing and map light mirror were not option's. And only certain colours.
M susspension, lsd, sport seats, s/wheel, rear opening quaters, shadow line, bbs and kit were all options.
There was a thread on this before and someone posted a copy of the broucher.
(And the real one's(86-87) had no e/w no pas no sunroof no extra's at all
)

Just because it doesn't say sport on the V5 doesn't mean it isn't genuine.andy1200 wrote:If it does not say 325i sport on the log book (V5) then it is not a genuine sport. The only was 100% to tell if its genuine sport is to give the last 7 digits of the vin to a BMW dealer and ask for a print out of the original spec.
On this is should have code 335* M TECHNIC SPORT PACKAGE.
If it doesn't have this then its not a genuine sport.
If you purchased a 2door 325i and asked for all the sport extras, (ie the 'sport pack' or whatever they called it) it would be a genuine sportfuzzy wrote:but could any e30 be purchased with all the sport extras as options with everything except the word 'sport'?

Map light mirror was an option an ALL E30 expept Convertibles.zaust wrote:Sport box, Black headlineing and map light mirror were not option's. And only certain colours.

It was a model specified by the importers (BMW UK I guess). It was only available in the UK and was made up of options that were all individually available from the factory but didn't necessarily have to be ordered together. The only part of the package that wasn't available on other cars seems to have been the black headlining. It's possible that BMW UK ordered it specially, or they might have just have not listed it for punters to order for themselves. I'm sure someone could find out if they really want to
The debate about making a sport yourself runs and runs. My personal opinion is that the state of the shell is more important than what the logbook says (and the mtech kits are nice moisture traps) and I don't see the difference between making your own and "re-shell" which happens in to Hartge/Alpine cars from time to time. However, some other people really really don't agree with my point of view. In the end, its only worth what someone will pay for it - and sports do attract a premium.

No Dave, you would have to order all the options individualy.oakey wrote:If you purchased a 2door 325i and asked for all the sport extras, (ie the 'sport pack' or whatever they called it) it would be a genuine sportfuzzy wrote:but could any e30 be purchased with all the sport extras as options with everything except the word 'sport'?

It doesn't have to have sport on the log book to be genuine!magpie wrote:m tech kit, and sport on the logbook. and 2.5 ltr
Read my posts above!
Oh and the main reason why the sport was offered as a uk only was that the LHD M3 proved to be unpopular and not a great seller due to LHD, hence the sport being introduced!
Read my previous posts!zaust wrote:And Map mirror
Map mirror was an option on ALL E30's EXCEPT CONVERTIBLES!!

Notice how on the new bmw's they have pikey I's, ES, SE, and SPORT trim levels now. All started way back on the E30! with SE and SPORT. LUX was a 4 cylinder SE as SE's started on the 6 pots
then all the in's and outs like 318is just came as they were and what ever extra options you wanted one fixed trim level

Oh ok. Didn't know that.bss325i wrote:No Dave, you would have to order all the options individualy.oakey wrote:If you purchased a 2door 325i and asked for all the sport extras, (ie the 'sport pack' or whatever they called it) it would be a genuine sportfuzzy wrote:but could any e30 be purchased with all the sport extras as options with everything except the word 'sport'?

Obviously no fool would buy a 2door 325i and pay more to have all the options added individually as no doubt it would cost more? So it's unlikely for there to be any.
