no big truck with the flashing lights like the daimler in france thendaimlerman wrote:My 2 E30s are in daily use.The 2.7 has been running 400plus miles each week since the waether perked up enough to allow reasonable sailing. The 316 is covering about 200 miles each week. Both cars are serviced properly and have proved reliable. In more than three years of E30 owning I have never had to recover a car or had a 'roadside' problem.
G104VHJ......Alpine White 318i Touring.....RIP
Mine gets used every day and the only thing thats gone while i have owned it is a fuel pipe split.... It's a 20 year old bit of rubber and cost peanuts to replace so im not upset at all, and it didn't leave the car stranded
On the other hand, i had a modern-ish ford escrote and it cost hundreds to keep it on the road in running repairs, it was slightly more economical on fuel but that was its only advantage..... E30 wins that contest hands down.

A lot of people look at NCAP crash ratings these days when considering a car, does this worry you at all? Modern small cars would way out perform an E30.
I love the shape of E30's and am currently considering selling my E46 daily driver and getting a 4 pot 2 door to run around in as the 2.7 only does 20mpg

Doesn't bother me. Been driving 15 years, never had an accident.MartC wrote:A lot of people look at NCAP crash ratings these days when considering a car, does this worry you at all? Modern small cars would way out perform an E30.
Went to our residents parking area. Every single car except mine was a fwd hatchback. I'd never noticed before, but I had to laugh. Seeing mine lurking in the back with its low ride & smoked lights looked mean.
My sport was used daily up until i bought the S50 touring and now thats used daily. Both about 500-1000 miles a month. The sport never let me down at the side of the road but i did come out one morning to a knackered battery. The S50 has been totaly reliable in the 3000 miles/4 months i've had it including a trip to the ring for 12 laps.
Fuel as always is the biggest bugbear.

Mine's a daily. In the last year I've done 14,350 in it and it's driven 365 days a year. 2 or 3 times a year it takes us on holiday and that is never less than 1500 miles in a week.
It's only let me down once in four and a half years. The CPS failed and the car had to be RAC'd home.
I bought it with 107k on and it's now got 163k.
Look after your E30 and it will look after you.
BTW, EuroNCAP means duck-all.
I can't remember which car it was now, but one of the modern piles of sh**e that litter our roads was upped from 4-star to 5- purely because the manufacturer stuck a sticker on the door pillar informing the passenger that the car's fitted with airbags.

I run mine day in, day out, doing about 300 miles a week to a tank (combined mileage since i do motorway and back roads to work
) I do service it fairly regularly, 2 weeks time is no exception with a refresh on wheel bearings, brake lines, fluids, steering rack to E36 and a normal service.
But that's cause it was a £400 car to begin with, but i still love it, its a interesting daily user and as yet, never let me down in getting me home and only once had an issue with restarting due to a dodgy earth lead. I've had it since 106,000 and it's now on 131,000 and still going strong

If true, that's fucking disgusting. And also wouldn't surprise me at all what with all the half-witted suited twats running things these days.StuBeeDoo wrote:

i used the m3 every day with no issues at all untill recently.
it got to the point where £100 of super unleaded a week on a journey thats not very exciting, coupled with seeing a car that was very tidy when i bought it starting to look a little worn, was too much so i decided to get something cheap and better on fuel.
i'm not sure i will ever understand the logic in spending several thousand pounds on something cheap to run, when you can buy a reasonably solid, tidy and reliable car for a grand these days which leaves a lot left over for a fun second car, of just to tuck away in case of emergency repairs.
buying a car just out of warranty is never a great idea. from experience, a 3 year warranty is a 3 year warranty for a good reason - things start going wrong at about 3 years 6 months
but please, if you do go for something a bit more modern, dull and sensible, find something a bit less shite than a corsa

I should point out that my Daimler was used for a trip to Italy the following summer when she ran 3000 miles in 12 days in temperatures of up to 40c at an average of 28.7mpg without opening the toolkit.Even a 1963 car running stoneage ignition and fueling can be made reliable if enough effort is put in.rubber_duck89 wrote:no big truck with the flashing lights like the daimler in france thendaimlerman wrote:My 2 E30s are in daily use.The 2.7 has been running 400plus miles each week since the waether perked up enough to allow reasonable sailing. The 316 is covering about 200 miles each week. Both cars are serviced properly and have proved reliable. In more than three years of E30 owning I have never had to recover a car or had a 'roadside' problem.
never heard of that, but i do know that no matter how good they are in a crash, a car won't get 5 stars unless there is a seatbelt reminderStuBeeDoo wrote:

My E36's are my daily drivers but my E30 has never let me down in 2.5 years and 11.5K miles. A bit of routine and, more importantly with an E30, preventive maintenance goes a long way. By todays standards they're a nuts and bolts car and simple to work on.

Daily driver here too. BUT you don't get a reliable daily driver by buying a car and fixing stuff as it breaks. Budget for a complete service to replace all the nasties like cambelt, waterpump, brake lines, viscous clutch, and get it looked at by someone who knows E30s. They can tell what needs changing and once all that lot is done you'll have a car you can trust.

Morat is right...
...but I've done the opposite, I got it serviced when I bought it, and since have done the work it needs as it needs is, admittedly I'm jobless atm and it did spend 3 weeks off the road, but thats mostly my own fault. I got it fixed in the end fine. (both inner rear CV joints, very rare!)
Its been fine for me besides that little problemo.

Mines a daily driver, but i do zero miles atm...just done a 400 round trip to pembrokshire....the petrol cost more than the beer and food for the weekend
i use mine daily to work and back (only about 4 miles a day mind) but it has taken much longer drives no problem....... now that the weather has improved i have taken to cycling and will try keep it up, and perhaps use my car as more of a habby now
mine is a 318 but i never bothered to work out the mpg as i reckon it would shock me
