There are a few different ratios to be had, ranging from 3.64, 3.91 (as fitted to Sports) and 4.10 - there may be others, but those are the ones i know. Basically, the higher the figure, the faster your car will accelerate, but then the higher the revs will need to be to cruise at motorway speeds and also your mpg will be lower. So it depends what you want really - better acceleration or more relaxed cruising speeds and mpg.
They usually go for around Ԛ£250 second-hand.

my 318is had a 4.10 open diff which broke so i replaced it with a 3.64 my car does more mph per gear and seems to do more miles to a tank but im not sure if the different diff is making speedo inaccurate. i used the speed pulse sensor from my old diff thinking it would retain the accuracy, dunno if it does but the speedo works so what the hell!
should i change it when finances improve or should i leave this one in the car?
