Can anyone tell me the benefits of a 'sausage' filter- ( http://www.itgairfilters.com/downloads/JC100.pdf) compared to 'sock' filters?

I cant see how there can be much difference in them for performance reasons.

I dont imagine I will be setting the sock filters on fire as I'm not going to running a mentally high lift cam and the fuelling should be spot on after Ant's worked his magic.

Help please :D . Obviously sock filters will save me a fair bit of wongar :)

I've heard sausage filters are better than sock filters.

I would of guessed the sausage has more surface area.

Probably, but not necessarily. I cant be bothered to work it out.

I have been told they are aswell and I believe it but I thought it was mainly due to the the fact that socks can set alight :D

I think for the time bieng I will use them unless anyone has any reasons not to

There is a Vaux tuner who warns against using socks due to them losing power when compared to sausage filters.. iirc it was quite a high figure, albeit on a v highly tuned lump..

Why would you loose power with them though compared to a sausage as they will both suck in alot of hot air :(

The only difference is that the with the sausage there is no filter foam touching the trumpets where as the socks are pressed against the trumpets. I suppose this may affect the amount of air the trumpet can intake?

it must be related to the how they sit with the trumpets and how they affect the airflow

i'm only relaying what ive found out previously.. they actually had it as a page on their site
Important Notes
Read below before you waste all the BHP you have spent lots of hard earned money on achieving & throw it away on the intake system.

1. Never use Ram pipe sock filters of any type, you will lose between 20 to 60 BHP.

Thanks for the info Jhonno. :D
I'm going to go for socks for the time being, as I'm poor :D

Then when I get it dynoed, if it doesnt produce as much power as I'd like, I will upgrade to a sausage.

Trumpets and socks ordered :D Should arrive monday so I'll update with some piccies.

For the record-

Sock filters are poo because they are touching the trumpets there fore restrict the airflow.
So as soon as its all fitted I will fit an itg sausage filter or a plenum. I dont want to go splashing out on anything expensive now incase it doesnt fit! lol

Personaly i wouldn't run anything. Only in the winter or mega shitty weather would i run somekind of itg filter, over them.

I know loads of people who run them open and have no problems in good weather.

So does that mean you have already ran a itb'd car without filters and the engine died six months later?

Or it that what you "think" will happen. Using your past experience running this said set-up.

Dont take me so seriously pal :D

I have never driven a car with open itb's. But from speaking to people with knowledge (I'm not saying you dont) sock filters do not filter the air as well as needed, so how can running them open be a great idea?
This is all for a road car btw so it will be getting driven reguarly.

Surely you understand that running open tbs is a risk.

@ Snoops. Its been put back a week from going to Ant's place. So next week it will be getting started and it shouldnt take too long hopefully :D

So to answer your question- soon :D

um.. why buy twice Dave? Seems a little odd to me.. How much cheaper are the socks? Dont settle for 2nd best, esp when a swap of filter could see the power your engine should be making!

This lump going to have a worked head btw?

Just a new cam and springs. Head allready gas flowed.

Socks are £10 each. Sausage filter £200+vat + backplate £50+ vat.
You're allways suspicious Jhonno. lol.
Basically I dont know exactly where the sausage filter will situate so I dont want to splash out on one until the itbs are all fitted.
The sausage filter from itg looks fantastic and it seems perfect for my application it it fits.

I can dyno it with socks and then with open tb's and see the power difference.

My technical knoledge(sp) of tuning isnt on par with the likes of ant, and its just common sense that dirt getting inside engines isnt a good thing. But personal experience, and seeing a lot of people i know running them open leads me to my suggestion that i made earlier. Hence why i also said shitty weather and winter id run filters/socks whatever. ANd damn right its a risk.

Anyway, high powered itb'd cars rock. The sound of open itb's on a "normal" engine is probably the 2nd best sound i can think of to do with cars.

Not ITB's, but similar setup. I ran socks on 110 x 50mm trumpets (with 2 " free on top of trumpet), seemed ok, changed for RC125 Maxiflow filters, made more revs, less torque. Now use narrow (36mm x 130mm) trumpets with and without socks (now with all the crap on the roads I use socks). Though I want to make up a plenum to feed cold air to the carbs
as I notice a distinct difference if sucking too much warm air. Pipercross do a sealed airbox for ITB/multicarb setups.

^ Yeah I have seen the pipercross ones but they dont do a filter the correct size for either all six trumpets or 2 filters for 3 trumpets each :(

Ah, sorry, I didn't read too well...a six pot! You could get one made up, but it won't be cheap I suppose.
For the airbox I want to make for mine I am using a home made (as is everything else on my car) plate attached to the TB's/carbs themselves, and an alloy tube, cut to fit the plate and blanked at one end.....with enough depth to leave the stacks in place inside the plenum. Essentially it will look like the Pipercross one...but a bit more DIY'ish, coz I'm skint as usual.

Who me?! :P :D

I'd be interested to see comparative dyno's open/socks/sausage - Be intriguing to see the effect on a fairly tuned M20, maps would need tweaking for each tho..

Checked ebay for any sausage filter bargains maybe?

regardless of all the above.. Get the tb's on there like yesterday i wanna hear it

Now i know this is not realy the topic of the thread but , all this talk about what filters to use on itb's and the power diffrences , butwhat about the acctual trumpet diameter and lenth ? how is this done i have itb;s to put on my m42 but am unsure about this

surley incorrect lenth trumpets would also affect the power ?

there isnt really such thing as incorrect trumpet length.. however length affects the power delivery of the engine

longer trumpets offer a little more mid range, shorter more top end as a general rule..

trumpet diameter is dictated by the size of the tb's used

I'm using 38mm tbs (which is quite small) with long runners therefore I should keep a fair bit of midrange. I have found lots of info of how to calculate where you get peak power, but I cant find any of the sites now :x

With engines like the m20/m42 its probably a matter of trial and error to get the lengths perfect.
