Re: production champ a good start?

I also looked at the production series to get into racing but decided that I would start off with simple track days and local sprints/hillclimbs. Doing the odd local track day, spring or hillclimb is cheap, your car doesn't have to be super competetive as you are just learning and are unlikely to wi...

Hi The reason why I'm asking is because after fitting my Piper 285 cam the little notch in the cam pulley decided to snap off. I happen to have a spare (used) cam pulley, however that one is also looking a little weak and I don't want to bend anotehr set of valves. Here's a pic of the old cam pulley...

M40 Vernier Pulley?

Does anyone know if there is a vernier pulley available for the 318 M40 engine? If not would other people be interested in this as I am sure either piper or kent cams might produce one if there is enough interest.

Re: 318 M40 Next Problem (no compression)

Indeed. The little notch in the Cam pulley broke and now all my pretty valves are now not so pretty. Engine is in bits again - new vales needed ... does anyone make a vernier for the M40 engine?

Re: 318 M40 Next Problem (no compression)

Hi. Thanks for you reply. I think I didn't make it clear enough as to what happened ... After rebuilding the head it started ok and we had it running for about 30 mins to make sure everything is working and it doesn't overheat. Trying to restart it a couple of days later it seems like it wanted to g...

However trying to start the engine up again tonight and I am finding a serious lack of compression ... none! I was planning on w...

Re: 318 M40 Not starting

Thanks all for your replies. It turned out to be the fuel rail connector (there are 2 plugs which are interchangable).

318 M40 Not starting

Hi everyone

I have just finished putting my engine back together (old head was cracked). Now I get plenty of spark and fuel to the return pipe, but the engine won't fire. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem could be?

Many thanks!

Is this sensor required or can it be left off? I have a set of leads for mine without sensor, but my car uses the ones with sensor?

Re: M40 Cylinder Head Tappet Pressure Spacers?

Ok. Just had a quick look and found a picture of the thrust pads, they are not the part I am looking for. It's more and more looking like these bits are not supposed to be there (unless someone knows different).

Re: M40 Cylinder Head Tappet Pressure Spacers?

Thanks for your answer, just to confirm that we are talking about the same part: The bit I am talking about is the square shaped spring clip that sits underneath the hydraulic tappet within the head. £1.18 seems a little expensive for the part I am talking about?! They almost look like they don't ...

M40 Cylinder Head Tappet Pressure Spacers?

Hi everyone. I am in the process of changing my cylinder head and in the head, behind the tappets are small (spare-ish) spacers/pressure things. Does anyone know what these are, why and are they only available through bmw? They don't come with head gasket sets etc.

Thanks!

BMW 318i Track Car What Diff?

Hi Folks

I am preparing a 318i M40 track car and was wondering if changing the diff is worth doing and what diff would people recommend?

The car is a 318i with the M40 engine pretty much standard but I might be tuning the engine at some point. Not decided yet.

Cheers,
