Bonnet Insulation
I am in the process of replacing my bonnet Insulation but finding it almost impossible to get the old adhesive off of the underside of the bonnet. So far I have tried soaking with water, panel wipe, alcohol, meths and paraffin but none have worked, obviously can't use thinners. Has anyone done this ...

Re: MOT Emissions Test and overheated
Thanks for that, very useful flow chart and looking at it it does look like the wrong test was done which is annoying as then it wouldn't of overheated as it wouldn't have to be idling for so long.
Still waiting for a new viscous fan to fit and then see what the state of play is then.

MOT Emissions Test and overheated
I took my 318i M40 1988 for am MOT, when it came to the emissions test the tester struggled to get the last reading down. He and his accomplice were very helpful in that they tried moving the probe further and further out to get the reading down as he said it was telling him that there was a leak on...

Cracked Dash
I think that this has been asked and covered many times but wanted an up to date reply.
I Have the common cracked dash and wanted to know if there is any successful repair that can be made or is the only solution to replace?
Thanks Mick

Converting to business radio/cassette.
Hi Guys, I have obtained a BMW business radio/cassette and want to fit it to my 1988 318i that has a standard Pioneer radio at present. My problem is that I need an adaptor for the aerial fitting and can not for the life of me find one. I can easily find an adaptor to convert from the business radio...

Sunroof bolts
I am gearing up to replace my sunroof (have to have the replacement I have resprayed) and read that the bolts should be replaced. I have thought instead to use a threadlock and wondered if anyone has done this job(especially a while ago and not had any issues with the bolts coming loose). Also any a...

Re: Antifreeze type?
Yes I definitely agree with not using oat and sticking with the blue. I used the oat in my E36 compact and couldn't make out why I kept getting a leak from the seal on the elbow at the back of the cylinder head, turns out that it is not kind to certain types of seals which I found out after searching...

Re: My standard 1988 318i
The colour is Atlantis blue. I bought the car when it was 4years old,it was owned by a financial company and had done 67k. Was using it daily up until a few years ago, it has done 182k but I don't use it much now. I have replaced the cam and followers, fuel tank and the clutch that's apart from the o...

Re: 1988 318i not charging and no battery dash light
Do you think it is worth buying a new regulator then Brian or biting the bullet and getting another alternator?

Re: 1988 318i not charging and no battery dash light
I have removed the regulator and checked the brushes and there is plenty of 'meat' left on them and they are moving freely, have cleaned everything up and put it back but there still is no ignition light and is not charging.

Re: 1988 318i not charging and no battery dash light
Brian, I have done the checks that you said and the ignition lights in both cases so its looking like the alternator. Do you have an idea of what particular component has failed as I have thought of stripping and repairing it myself.
Thanks for your help.

Re: 1988 318i not charging and no battery dash light
Hi Paul thanks for your reply. I did take the bulb and socket out and put 12v through it and it did light. I have thought about swapping it with the oil light indicator bulb and see if this works which means stripping out the dash again.
