Wait, I'm being thick...
... one hose should be hot, the other cold
It appears that check control sensors stick. They are float valves that don't always float.
Just how pressurised is the system meant to get?

M52b28... The cabin blowers blowed cold and the temp guage needle never raised into the middle of the guage, only reaching just over the first white line and often falling short, even on a 40 mile run. Newbie to M52s...
Engine one: I've just bought an e36 328i with a full MOT and low mileage. The body is sound, but who knows what a full year will do to it... My plan is to source M50 bits and bobs to squeeze more power from it, then to sell the engine and ancilliaries on the zone for a 24V conversion. Engine two: I'...

Re: m52/m50 hybrid??
Sorry to dig this old thread up, but I've bought a cheap 323 lump. I understand it has 2500ish cc. I understand the Alloy blocked M52s were detuned units. If I were to fit an M52 Vanos inlet (inc injectors), throttle body and ECU would I see decent power, or should I get M50b25 cams too? Thanks chaps.

Worn turbo oil seals cause this.

Re: E36 328i coupe, what to look out for?
Nikasil problems can show as overheating, but mainly through lack of compression. The m52 engine has an alloy head and an alloy block. Read up on Lee Parkes M52 swap into a compact and you'll see the worrysome side of the M52. That said I have overheated the engine in my m52b20 with no longer term d...

Re: E36 328i coupe, what to look out for?
Simon is dead proud of that Avatar. Suffered during Ice Hockey IIRC. Nikasil is a compound material that was used in a number of alloy cased BMW engines to save weight. It was okay when tested using higher grade fuels in Germany. Many people in the UK bought cars with the engines and used supermarke...

Rear arches, boot floor especially under battery. Jack it up on each jacking point using the BMW jack to test the sills. Inspect the area surrounding all four jacking pucks too. Rear driveline- Rear shock top mounts fail, lower arm front bushes go and make huge clonks. Diff mounts can tear holes in ...

Its has a recon rad.
The viscous fan test... an old paper? Surely a knackered viscous link over cools because it goes stiff?
It goes red on a run when I've given it a bit of welly (not a lot though), but no trip longer than ten miles.

Re: M50/ M52 question
Well it keeps pointing towards the red.
I shut it down and let it cool.
I'd say debris was the issue if I hadn't taken off the pump and stat housing and flushed before refilling.
The pump has a metal impeller.
The stat housing no longer leaks.
Compressions are fine
I'm beat!

Re: M50/ M52 question
Thanks fellas. Basically, I'll hunt a full loom and ecu in order to go a few cc up. But the M52 stuff would run the M50 if I stay 2litre. And finally, perhaps the cooling system has not been well kept up to my ownership. I could spend many hundreds getting it to cool well, but what damage could have...

M50/ M52 question
I have an M52 engined 320i. I'd feel more comfortable with the old iron blocked M50. If I were to fit a Vanos M50b20tu, would all of my M52b20tu ancillaries fit? Say for arguments sake it was a bare engine... Also would my engine management happily run the M50? Finally, say I found an M50b25tu... .....

I had a problem like this on a Pug (I know...) it turned out to be a faulty diode on the back of the alternator, dripping the stored charge down overnight.
