E30 Zone

The brown one is the thermotime switch. Depending on temperature, it will cause the cold start valve to operate the cold start injector for up to 8 seconds.

The dashboard temp gauge is uncoloured I think.

The only E28s with the M20 are the 520i and 525e. The 525i and 528i were M30 engines. The US version of the 525e was the 528e, but ran the same 2.7l M20 engine.

That's what's wrong. Replace it with a new item, it's Ã‚£20 or thereabouts. Check your other vacuum hoses too.

This sounds like it's not getting out of the blue. I'd change the temp sender.

The E21 320 (M10 - M43/1) is 1990cc and produces 109bhp and 157ft/lb torque and weighs 1036kgs.
The E21 320 (M20b20 carb) is 1990cc and produces 120bhp and 121ft/lb torque and weighs 1090kgs.

The M10 is a much more tunable and durable engine.

I know of a pretty good E21 320. It's a 2L M10 engine with 70k on the clock. Nice car, needs a new NS front wing. Rest looks solid enough. PM me if interested.

I'd say that wouldn't be far off wrong in city driving. Have you done a brim test? Fill up to when the pump clicks out. Reset your milometer, drive until you need to fill up, go to the same petrol station, fill to one click again and then see how many litres you used. Convert this to gallons and div...

Could be an airlock, could be a dodgy expansion tank cap. What makes you think it's not circulating water? Are the heaters cold? If they are, it's either an air lock, or knackered pump. I'd also be looking at the thermostat.

Has it got water in? Is the viscous fan working? Is the thermostat working? What does the radiator look like? Is the water pump working?

The M40 maybe is prone to wearing out cams, but the M10 is a very very durable engine.

I wouldn't say any of the engines are particularly delicate at all.

My chrome 2dr E plate 318i is rust free bar a 10p size scab on a rear arch. And I mean no rust anywhere else, not in the sunroof, under the carpets, jacking points, scuttle panel and it has never been welded.

Rust free examples do exist!

Have you checked the boot seal? Rear light seals? Rear inner wings near the arch for holes?

I'd bet money of the fan. A new one is Ã‚£30 from GSF and is a thirty minute job to fit IF its a pain! The newspaper test works, also you should be able to actually hear the fan working when hot.

I have checked and I have an aux. air valve (bolted near the cam cover, two air pipes and plug?) so I'll clean test and replace as required.

The idle on my M10 has gone a bit funny. When cold it's a bit low (650rpm), when at normal temp it's a bit high (850-900rpm) and sometimes sticks higher (1000rpm). I can't see any vacuum leaks. If you mean the bulb that lights up the buttons then it's the dealer I think, as the bulb is not seperable from the holder. If it's the lcd display panel then you need to get your sodlering iron out and get two bulbs from maplins. Take the light bar with you from the OBC (it slides out at the side) ...

Maplins, look in their catalogue, there's only one bulb that really is anything like the standard. You'll have to dispense witht he old bulb holders and just solder the bulb direct. I've recently done the same for an E28 OBC. Including unsoldering the old bulbs, it took 5 minutes. 10 if you include ...

The bonnet and boot shut lines on that car look do not right at all.

I doubt it, aren't they different engines? The one in a 2002 being a M10b20, and the 2.5 being an M20b25.
