moving an engine

I recently picked up a 325i engine and box complete with all ancillaries. To move it, I hired a luton van with tail lift which made the job a doddle. Some ratchet tie downs would be useful too unless you don't mind your engine joining you in the cab under braking!

3.5 engine/box

I was in Bridges Breakers at Pease Pottage (M23 services) last Saturday 26th May and they had in their older cars yard a complete E28 M535i. Engine and gearbox were still in it, I think this model has the dog leg 1st? The interior was beige leather and was all there inc the recaros. The only thing m...

Re: average age of zoners

Welcome to the zone (you'll find it as addictive as the cars) I'm slightly older than you too. Age is no barrier to having fun!

on line tyres

Try www.eTyres.co.uk I've bought a set of Toyos from them cheaper than local independent suppliers. They come to your door with a fully equipped van, price includes supply/fit, valves, balancing and VAT. They also take away your old tyres.

Re: 318 is engine swap

Thanks for the info. I understood that the blocks are the same on both engines so the gearbox should match ok. I've just bought a 318is with a rattly engine, could be the usual timing chain problem but I was just looking at other engine options if it turns out to be more serious.

Thanks

Re: remote alarm problem????

My H reg 320 Touring has just done exactly the same thing. I opened up the alarm case and found a battery in there which is split and leaking. Could this be the problem or is it just a back up?

I know, crazy isn't it. There was one broken wire right in the middle of the rubber bellows thingy. The other wires were a bit creased but ok. The piece of loom going into the door was badly twisted so maybe someone's fiddled with it before.

Thanks to Martin, problem solved. I found the extra plug hidden behind the B pillar and traced the fault to a broken wire. Cheers.

No it's definitely dead, like the parrot this is an ex electric window. Neither switch will operate the window but they do work when swapped around with the other doors. Their seems to be a power failure somewhere before the motor.

ok thanks, I'll give that a try. The car's been standing for three years and had various electrical problems, mostly dirty or loose connections. This is the last fault before I get the car back on the road and it's driving me mad!

Elecric windows Help!!!?

My near side rear electric window isn't working. All the others work perfectly. The problem appears to be no power. I've checked the 2 pin plug in the door and cleaned it up but it seems to be dead ( no power from either pin when tested with a meter) I've also swapped round all the lift switches and...

The way I understood it, was if it's an LSD you'll leave a nice pair of 11s and an open one leaves a pair of 33s!!!

Another way is to jack the car up under the diff (both wheels off the ground) and rotate one wheel. If the other wheel rotates in the same direction you have an LSD, if it rotates the opposite way you have an open diff.

Air Con.

I've got one of these systems in my touring. They were fitted by Salmon Diavia and were a BMW approved item as I believe there wasn't a factory option for the 3 series at this time. It may be worth contacting them direct. I've still got the dealer supplied handbook for mine somewhere, I'll have a lo...

Toyo T1 R

Hi, don't know if this will help but I had a chat with a Toyo technical rep at the Autosport International show in January. He told me that the T1 R is the newer tyre and uses different technology to the S. The carcass is manufactured in a fully laden profile which is designed to put more tread on t...

Chrome instrument rings

Thanks for all the replies. Mine are the click in type so hopefully I won't need to glue anything, and thanks to Ian for the glue tip, that's exactly the sort of thing that seems to happen to me! Now I've got no excuse for messing it up.

Chrome instrument rings

HELP!! I was given a set of chrome instrument rings for Xmas (lucky me)
but when I stripped the pod out, I found the clear perspex panel appears to be glued in. Am I missing something obvious or is there more to this than it says in the instructions "simply snap in place"!!!

Anyone know which would be the best LSD to go for on my 320i touring. I do a lot of motorway driving so don't want anything too low. I can't afford the industrial strength neurofen!!

Just had a look at the website recommended by Martin 323i. Yes, a lot of useful info here and the guys trial and error approach sounds very familiar to me! Not being built like the incredible hulk myself, I think I may have to scrounge a ramp somewhere when I'm ready to do the job.

Auto to manual is it possible?

I am new to BMW's and have bought a 320i touring in immaculate condition with loads of history, it's only done 65k. I love the car, but not the auto trans! Has anyone converted one to manual? If so, how difficult is it (I'd probably have to work on the car in my driveway). Any help would be apprecia...
